Job Title: Environmental Safety and Health Specialist

Reports to: Plant Manager

Key Responsibilities

1. Regulatory Compliance & Audits

  • Ensure compliance with federal (OSHA, EPA), state (MIOSHA, Michigan DEQ), and local regulations .
  • Conduct routine safety inspections, risk assessments, and environmental audits .
  • Maintain accurate records for hazardous waste (lead acids), SDS, and incident reports .

2. Hazard Identification & Mitigation

  • Evaluate risks related to battery manufacturing processes (chemical exposure, fire/explosion hazards, ergonomics).
  • Recommend and implement engineering controls, PPE, and safety procedures .
  • Lead incident investigations and root cause analysis to prevent recurrences.

3. Training & Employee Engagement

  • Develop and deliver EHS training programs (lockout/tagout, HAZMAT, emergency response).
  • Promote a strong safety culture through toolbox talks, safety committees, and employee feedback systems.
  • Collaborate with HR to address employee health concerns (exposure monitoring, ergonomic assessments).

4. Environmental & Sustainability Initiatives

  • Oversee waste management, air/water permitting, and spill prevention plans .
  • Support sustainability efforts (recycling programs, energy efficiency improvements).

Qualifications & Skills

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene , or related field.
  • 3+ years of EHS experience in manufacturing (chemical, battery, or automotive sectors preferred) .
  • Knowledge of OSHA 1910, MIOSHA, EPA RCRA, and DOT hazardous materials regulations .
  • Strong problem-solving skills with experience in incident investigation (5 Whys, Fishbone analysis) .
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, EHS management software .

Preferred:

  • Certifications: OSHA 30, CSP, CIH, or CHMM .
  • Experience with lead acid battery safety protocols .
