About Us The AI Cloud and Developer Infrastructure organization is responsible for delivering and maintaining the tools and services engineers here at GM use every day to do their best work and drive our cars forward. Our tools enhance the entire development process for engineers at GM—how, where, and how code is checked out, modified, compiled, tested, merged, and finally deployed. Job Overview We are looking for a Senior Engineer with extensive background in software and systems engineering, a passion for developer productivity, and experience using a variety of developer tools and technologies. As a leader on this team, you will focus on the technical development of your teammates, balance business priorities with engineering growth, and identify high‑ROI investments with minimal guidance. Team As part of the AV Developer Productivity Org, you will create and maintain a robust, reliable, and cohesive inner‑loop development experience for AV developers at GM. We achieve this through internally developed tools, vendor tools, and tool integrations. The impact you deliver may vary, but you will identify how you can have the greatest effect with minimal guidance. What You’ll Do Use your software and systems engineering skills to contribute code, perform code reviews, and create technical designs that improve performance and reliability of observability systems. Proactively identify and address challenges that create new opportunities to improve engineering practices through observability. Partner with Software Engineering teams to understand use‑cases and guide engineers in effective tool usage. Build tools that enable engineers to collect and act on observability signals from distributed cloud systems and on‑vehicle sensors. Influence the team’s technical roadmap by evaluating new tools and technologies through PoCs and selecting roadmap investments aligned with our vision. Drive software engineering best practices within your team and across the AV organization, creating tooling that encourages these practices. Guide the team to balance delivering impact and addressing technical debt. Mentor and grow engineers on the team and across the organization. Required Qualifications 5+ years of experience designing, building, and operating production systems at scale in the cloud. Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent work experience. Understanding of AI engineering principles and concepts. Experience designing highly scalable, reliable, and maintainable services. Experience writing in Go or other production‑scale languages. Understanding of Unix/Linux, SSH, and networking fundamentals. Attention to detail and a desire to improve processes and systems. Ability to lead and influence others, both internally and externally. Principled reasoning, research, documentation, communication, and defense of proposals. Ability to make trade‑offs and communicate reasoning. Ability to manage competing priorities, focus on shipping, and work effectively under pressure. Passion for mentoring and nurturing junior engineers. Passion for leveling up overall team efficiency and effectiveness. Passion for self‑driving technology and its societal impact. Preferred Qualifications Experience working with GCP, AWS, or Azure. Familiarity with Kubernetes, Docker, Istio, Terraform, Prometheus, Grafana, TSDBs, and observability pipelines. Skilled in defining and instrumenting SLI and SLO metrics. Contributions or ownership of open source projects. 5+ years of experience designing, building, and operating production systems at scale in the cloud. Compensation Salary range: $178,420 – $230,500, with actual base salary varying based on position factors. Bonus potential: incentive payouts tied to company performance, job level, and individual performance.
