Growing together.The Capitation Accounting Manager is responsible for leading a team of accounting professionals and overseeing the accounting, financial reporting, and close activities related to delegated payment arrangements. This role ensures the accuracy and integrity of financial results through effective management of general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, financial analyses, and compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), company policies, and regulatory requirements.The position plays a key role in the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, financial reporting, audit support, intercompany accounting, and continuous process improvement initiatives. The successful candidate will provide leadership, technical accounting expertise, and strategic insights to support business objectives while maintaining a solid control environment.Primary Responsibilities:Lead and develop a team of Capitation Accountants, providing guidance, coaching, and oversight to ensure high-quality deliverables and professional growthOversee the monthly financial close process for assigned areas, ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of financial statements and related reportingReview and approve journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting analyses. Investigate and resolve reconciling items, including subledger-to-general ledger differencesPrepare, validate, and maintain monthly, quarterly, and annual general ledger reporting related to delegated payment arrangementsPerform and review variance analyses to identify and explain fluctuations, emerging trends, and deviations from budget/forecast, while providing actionable insights and recommendationsConduct research and analysis to identify trends, anomalies, risks, and opportunities for process improvements and enhanced financial controlsCollaborate with UHG affiliate companies to manage the accounting and reporting of capitation-related payments, accruals, receivables, and intercompany balances, ensuring accurate intersegment accounting, financial reporting, and reconciliation of outstanding itemsManage internal, external, and regulatory audit activities, including the preparation of schedules, supporting documentation, and responses to auditor inquiriesProvide operational and technical accounting expertise to ensure compliance with GAAP, company policies, regulatory requirements, and applicable lawsCommunicate financial information and business impacts effectively to leadership through clear analysis, reporting, and presentationsPartner with cross-functional teams to support strategic initiatives, process enhancements, system implementations, and other special projects related to capitation accounting and reportingDrive continuous improvement initiatives that enhance financial controls, reporting accuracy, operational efficiency, and scalabilityLead and facilitate monthly operational and financial meetings with business partners and internal stakeholders to review membership changes, capitation payment activity, expense trends, and other current-period issues impacting financial results, ensuring timely identification, resolution, and communication of key risks and variancesYou'll be rewarded and recognized for your performance in an environment that will challenge you and give you clear direction on what it takes to succeed in your role as well as provide development for other roles you may be interested in.Required Qualifications:Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and relevant accounting experience3+ years of progressive accounting experience, including responsibility for month-end close, journal entry preparation and review, account reconciliations, and financial reportingExperience working with general ledger and subledger accounting systems in a complex business environmentSolid understanding of U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and their practical applicationIntermediate or higher level of proficiency with Microsoft ExcelPreferred Qualifications:CPA designation and/or public accounting experienceExperience within the healthcare, insurance, or managed care industryExperience with PeopleSoft Financials, Hyperion Smart View, BlackLine, or similar financial reporting and reconciliation toolsExperience supervising, managing, and developing staff, including coaching, mentoring, performance management, and employee development within an accounting or finance environmentDemonstrated ability to work independently while effectively collaborating in a team environmentDemonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing business needs in a fast-paced environmentProven solid planning, organizational, and project management skills with exceptional attention to detailProven excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate financial information to various levels of managementProven analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to perform complex financial analyses and identify actionable solutionsProven self-motivated with solid time management skills and a demonstrated ability to drive results with minimal supervision*All employees working remotely will be required to adhere to UnitedHealth Group's Telecommuter PolicyPay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The salary for this role will range from $91,700 - $163,700 annually based on full-time employment.
