Vehicle Maintenance Technician I

BASIC FUNCTION

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform occasional routine diagnostics and semi-skilled to skilled work in the inspection, diagnosis, repair, and routine maintenance of school buses and a variety of large and small diesel, gas, and alternative fueled District vehicles and equipment; perform required inspections and preventive maintenance of buses and other District vehicles.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Vehicle Maintenance Technician I – Entry‑level class focused on basic or routine diagnostics, tasks, and duties. Vehicle Maintenance Technician II – Full journey‑level class performing complete diagnostics, engine overhauls, and full range of duties; requires minimal assistance and full awareness of operating procedures and policies. Vehicle Maintenance Technician III – Advanced journey‑level class performing the most difficult and complex diagnostics and responsibilities; requires full training in all procedures related to the assigned area of responsibility.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

Perform occasional routine diagnostics for mechanical defects and various types of mechanical repairs, such as adjusting, repairing, and replacing transmissions; replacing and adjusting bearings; servicing and repairing electrical systems and ignition systems; adjusting, repairing, and replacing brakes E Perform semi‑skilled and skilled work in the inspection, diagnosis, minor repair, and routine maintenance of school buses and a variety of large and small diesel, gas, and alternative fueled District vehicles and equipment to assure proper and safe operating condition; perform routine preventive maintenance on District vehicles E Operate computerized and specialized equipment in the testing, diagnosis, and repair of District vehicles; operate a computer and assigned software, including computerized on‑board systems and electronics, to compile and evaluate information used in the diagnosis of system malfunctions E Adjust, repair, and maintain air and hydraulic brake systems; perform transmission and engine inspections, maintenance, and repairs; perform minor and major tune‑ups on District vehicles as appropriate E Inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain vehicle electrical systems, such as lighting, wiring, fuel, air conditioning, lubricating, emission, hydraulic and cooling systems as assigned E Diagnose, repair, or replace vehicle transmissions; repair, adjust, or replace various components, such as fuel systems, hydraulic cylinders, valve controls, generators, ignition systems, bearings, drive trains, and gears E Perform scheduled preventative maintenance inspections; assure compliance with California Highway Patrol school bus maintenance regulations and Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards E Operate a variety of equipment, such as hand and power tools, lifts, jacks, stands, tire machines, testers, meters, and diagnostic equipment necessary to perform assigned duties E Utilize schematics, rough sketches, and technical manuals to assure proper inspection, maintenance, and repair of District vehicles and equipment E Perform advanced welding to design, fabricate, modify, and install various vehicle components E Build and install special equipment; make emergency repairs to District vehicles or equipment in the field E Perform minor repair work on repairing and adjusting vehicle bodies E Perform emissions testing on District vehicles E Inspect vehicles and equipment; make written reports on needed and completed repairs E Prepare and maintain a variety of written or electronic logs and records, such as maintenance activities, repairs, and assigned activities E Communicate with District personnel and various outside agencies to exchange information, coordinate activities, and resolve issues or concerns related to vehicle maintenance and assigned activities E Maintain tools, equipment, machinery, and work area for District vehicles in a safe, clean, and orderly condition E Respond to emergency repair needs as requested E Operate vehicles and equipment for recovery, repair, and testing operations E Perform the duties of the Vehicle Service Worker as needed or assigned E Drive a vehicle to conduct work E Participate in ongoing trainings and staff development. Perform related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from high school (or equivalent) and two years of experience involving vehicle maintenance and repair work.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents must have an acceptable driving record and must qualify for insurability by the District's insurance carrier. The following licenses or other requirements must be obtained within the first six (6) months of employment: Valid California Class B or Class A commercial driver's license with passenger and air brake endorsements. US Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's Certificate. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification in Master Automotive Technician, Master Medium/Heavy Duty Truck Technician, or Master School Bus Technician is desired. NOTE: This classification has been identified as a safety-sensitive job class based on the guidelines of the U.S. Department of Transportation. Employees in this job class are subject to random selection for alcohol or controlled substance testing.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Proper methods, techniques, materials, tools, and equipment commonly used in vehicle maintenance and repair work. Principles of internal combustion engines and automotive mechanical and electrical systems. Techniques, practices, theories, and procedures of diesel, gas, and alternative fueled vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair. Diagnostic procedures for vehicles and equipment. Operation of computerized and specialized equipment used in the diagnosis and repair of vehicles including on-board systems and electronics. Principles of air and hydraulic brake systems. Proper operation of school buses, District vehicles, and fork‑lifts. Preventive maintenance practices and procedures. Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code, Education Code, and Administrative Code applicable to the operation and maintenance of school buses. Appropriate Health and Safety regulations, safety precautions, and procedures. Safe and defensive driving methods and techniques. Applicable State and Federal laws, codes, and regulations related to assigned activities. Maintain current knowledge of applicable District and site policies, procedures, and objectives of assigned program and activities. Math applicable to vehicle maintenance. Basic record‑keeping techniques. Oral and written communication skills. Basic computer skills. Proper lifting techniques. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.

ABILITY TO

Perform a variety of mechanical maintenance and repair work on District vehicles and equipment. Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and computerized malfunctions. Troubleshoot to diagnose repairs and maintenance of vehicles and equipment. Operate a variety of tools, machines, and equipment used in assigned activities. Operate computerized and specialized equipment used in the diagnosis and repair of vehicles. Read and interpret electrical and mechanical diagrams. Read and apply technical and mechanical diagrams, schematics, and repair manuals. Maintain knowledge of current technological advances in the field. Observe health and safety regulations including the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Drive vehicles and a fork‑lift safely and efficiently. Read, interpret, and follow rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Observe legal and defensive driving practices. Perform routine record‑keeping techniques. Perform basic math. WORKING CONDITIONS

ENVIRONMENT

Vehicle and equipment maintenance repair facility environment. Driving a vehicle to conduct work. Driving in various road and weather conditions to conduct work.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Bending at the waist, kneeling, or crouching. Climbing ladders, stairs, or ramps. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a keyboard/keypad and a variety of tools and equipment. Hearing and speaking to exchange information. Lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling moderately heavy objects (50 lbs.) as needed for the position. Reaching overhead, horizontally, and above the shoulders. Seeing to operate a vehicle and perform inspections and repairs. Walking or standing for extended periods of time.
