Transportation Planner

ABOUT THE POSITION Transportation Planner | Washington, DC | Tysons, Richmond, Williamsburg or Virginia Beach, VA. VHB’s Virginia offices have an immediate opening for a Transportation Planner! This is an exciting opportunity to work within a dynamic team, across diverse disciplines, giving you exposure to a wide variety of projects in size and scope. Responsibilities Supports multimodal transportation planning projects. Conduct and synthesize data‑driven analyses (travel demand, safety, access, equity, and performance measures) into clear, compelling planning recommendations. Conduct technical traffic engineering work using Synchro, SIDRA, HCS, MicroStation and VISSIM. Support public and stakeholder engagement, including workshops, open houses, small group meetings, and online engagement. Coordinate with internal teams (planning, engineering, urban design, environmental, and GIS) to develop integrated solutions. Mentor junior staff by reviewing work, providing feedback, and modeling collaborative team behavior. Skills & Abilities Comfort working with data and analysis tools (e.g., GIS, Excel, transportation datasets, safety data) and interpreting results for planning applications. Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills. Team‑oriented with strong capability to work independently. A strong work ethic with the desire to learn and achieve. The ability to work on multiple projects and work independently. Excellent attention to detail. Proficiency with communication tools such as Word, PowerPoint, and graphics software. Qualifications 8+ years of planning, consulting, and compliance experience in the transportation sector. Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Civil Engineering, Transportation Planning, or a related field. Professional certification or PE preferred (i.e., American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) or PTOE certification). Compensation & Benefits The base salary range for this position is $100,000 to $150,000 for Virginia and DC offices. This offer is determined based on a number of job‑related factors including internal comparators, skills, education, training, credentials, experience, scope and complexity of role responsibilities and geographic location.
