Forester 4 – Area Forester Northern Southeast Area (PCN 10‑9246) Location: Haines, AK Responsibilities This position manages the Haines State Forest and contributes to state land management in the Northern Southeast Area. The forester applies multiple-use management, prepares commercial timber sales, and plans and implements sale layout, timber cruising, contract development, and sale administration. The forester works alone and in small teams in remote and rural forests, documents professional matters, and influences timber sale purchasers, contractors, and the public to protect the State’s interests. Time is also spent administering the Alaska Forest Practices Act on private land and preparing for fieldwork, processing information, and resolving issues in written and verbal forms. Working Environment The job is based in the Haines office, with a team of two people. Office time varies with the season; field work is approximately 50% of the year, often daily for the State Forest, with regional assignments ranging from 3 days to 2 weeks. Travel accommodations are typically at hotels, short‑term rentals, or remote camps in small communities. Position‑Specific Competencies Self-Management: Sets well‑defined goals, works with minimal supervision, and demonstrates responsible, motivated behavior. Forest Management: Knowledge of silviculture and forest ecology, harvesting, inventories, regeneration, sustainability, conservation, and disturbance roles. Geospatial Science: Skills in collecting, storing, analyzing, visualizing, and distributing geographic data and maps. Analytical Thinking/Problem Solving: Uses a logical, systematic approach to address problems and manage situations by drawing on knowledge and resources. Oral and Written Communication: Expresses information clearly to varied audiences and responds appropriately to nonverbal cues. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in forestry, natural resources, or a closely related field with a minimum of 24 semester hours or 36 quarter hours in forestry or related curricula.

AND EITHER

One year of professional advanced‑level experience in forestry or a closely related field (e.g., Forester 3 or equivalent). OR Three years of professional journey‑level experience in forestry or a closely related field (e.g., Forester 2, Fire Management Officer, or equivalent). Substitutions: Four years of postsecondary education (minimum 24 semester hours or 36 quarter hours in forestry or related field) AND journey‑level experience in forest management practices may substitute for the bachelor’s degree. Certification from an accredited vocational technical school in forestry or related field plus three years of experience in forest management practices may substitute. NWCG Incident Qualification Card (red card) within the preceding three years for Incident Commander Type 2, Planning Section Chief Type 2, Operations Section Chief Type 2, or Logistics Section Chief Type 2 may substitute for the required education.
