On-call Biologist

We are seeking an experienced and adaptable On-call Biologist to provide timely biological expertise across a range of operational, research, and field-based activities. This role is suited to a professional who can respond calmly to changing priorities, work independently when required, and maintain high standards of scientific accuracy, safety, and documentation. Availability for scheduled on-call periods, including occasional evenings, weekends, or public holidays, will be required.


Responsibilities will include supporting biological surveys, sampling programmes, monitoring activities, and investigations; identifying and recording biological specimens or environmental observations; collecting, handling, preserving, and transporting samples in accordance with approved procedures; and maintaining accurate field and laboratory records. You may also assist with data entry, quality assurance checks, technical reporting, preparation of equipment, and the interpretation of biological or ecological results. The role may involve responding to urgent requests, assessing situations in the field, escalating risks appropriately, and communicating clear updates to colleagues and relevant stakeholders. Compliance with health and safety, biosecurity, environmental, ethical, and regulatory requirements is essential.


Applicants should hold a degree or equivalent qualification in biology, ecology, environmental science, zoology, microbiology, or a related discipline, together with practical experience in biological sampling, laboratory work, field surveys, or a comparable setting. Knowledge of species identification, sample management, scientific data handling, and relevant legislation is desirable. You will need strong written and verbal communication skills, sound judgement, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritise tasks under pressure. A current driving licence and willingness to travel to varied locations may be required. Training and guidance will be provided where appropriate, but candidates must demonstrate initiative, reliability, professional integrity, and a commitment to maintaining accurate, evidence-based work.
