2 days ago Be among the first 25 applicants Location: Alfred, NY Category: Classified Posted On: Mon Jun 23 2025 Job Description: Cleaners are essential members of our facilities team, responsible for ensuring that campus buildings and surrounding areas are clean, safe, and welcoming. This role plays a key part in maintaining a healthy and professional environment for students, staff, and visitors by performing a wide range of routine and specialized cleaning tasks. Cleaners work independently or as part of a team to support daily operations by cleaning and maintaining public buildings, academic spaces, residential facilities, restrooms, laboratories, and common areas. Assignments vary in physical effort and may include light, medium, or heavy tasks. Cleaners are also instrumental in infection control and in maintaining safety standards throughout the facilities. Primary Responsibilities Clean and maintain floors, hallways, stairwells, walls, windows, and other surfaces using mops, buffers, vacuums, and other cleaning equipment. Sanitize and restock restrooms, locker rooms, kitchens, and common areas to meet health and safety standards. Safely handle and dispose of trash, recycling, and, when applicable, medical or biohazardous waste. Strip, wax, and polish floors; vacuum and shampoo carpets. Respond to spills and incidents involving bodily fluids such as blood, vomit, or urine, following proper safety protocols. Clean and polish furniture, metal fixtures, and high-touch surfaces. Replace light bulbs and clean fixtures using ladders or scaffolds as needed. Set up and break down furniture and equipment for meetings or special events. Perform seasonal tasks such as snow removal, salting sidewalks, or mowing lawns. Follow proper procedures for mixing and using cleaning solutions and wearing protective gear. Monitor supply levels and report maintenance or safety issues to the appropriate supervisor. Work Environments May Include Academic and administrative buildings Residential and dining facilities Medical areas or laboratories with strict sanitation protocols Outdoor grounds and entryways Cleaners are classified under the Labor Class in New York State Civil Service, which means the position does not require a civil service exam. Appointment is based on a candidate's qualifications and ability to perform the job. Preference will be given to those with manual labor experience, 5 years continuous employment with one employer and/or at least a High School diploma.
