Under general supervision, the Campus Security Guard provides security coverage for the College by conducting patrols and security checks, monitoring campus activities, reporting hazards, assisting with incident response, and supporting the Campus Police Department. This position helps maintain a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors through proactive observation, reporting, and customer service. This is a NON-SWORN position

What You'll Do

• Conduct foot patrols and security checks of College buildings, including interior and exterior areas, parking lots, walkways, and campus grounds to identify security concerns, safety hazards, and unauthorized activity.
• Monitor activities, vehicles, and pedestrian traffic in parking lots, courtyards, and common areas.
• Manage physical and electronic security systems, including the Genetec Unified Security Platform for access control and video surveillance.
• Observe and report suspicious persons, activities, or circumstances to Campus Police Officers.
• Utilize two-way radio communications and other department-issued equipment to maintain contact with Campus Police Officers and dispatchers.
• Assist with crowd management, traffic control, and security operations during special events, ceremonies, and campus activities.
• Monitor campus facilities for unauthorized access, unsecured doors, lighting issues, and other security vulnerabilities.
• Routinely surveys the campus to check for any safety, health or environmental concerns and report findings to appropriate personnel.
• Provide information, directions, and assistance to students, employees, and visitors in a professional and courteous manner.
• Prepare accurate and timely security reports documenting incidents, observations, security concerns, and daily activities.
• Performs all other related duties as assigned.

What We Are Looking For

• High school diploma or equivalent with previous experience in security, law enforcement, military service, customer service, or related field
• Basic knowledge of security procedures, incident reporting, and emergency response practices.
• Must possess a CPR/First Responder Certification or be willing to obtain within three (3) months.

OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that

• Associate degree in Criminal Justice
• Experience working in an educational or public service environment

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge of campus security principles, emergency response procedures, incident reporting, and crime prevention practices.
• Ability to conduct proactive foot patrols, identify safety and security concerns, and respond appropriately to routine and emergency situations.
• Skill in operating security technologies, including access control systems, video surveillance, two-way radios, computers, and other department-issued equipment.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to prepare accurate reports and interact professionally with students, employees, visitors, and law enforcement personnel.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain composure under pressure, and make appropriate decisions within established policies and procedures.
• Demonstrated customer service, conflict de-escalation, and interpersonal skills while maintaining a visible, approachable, and professional presence on campus.
• Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, maintain confidentiality, and establish effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and the ability to learn and effectively use security management software and other technology required to perform assigned duties.

Additional Information

Work Environment: Work is performed in a variety of environments throughout the College's campus. Regular foot patrols of academic buildings, administrative offices, parking lots, sidewalks, and campus grounds in varying weather conditions. Involves frequent interaction with students, employees, visitors, contractors, and law enforcement personnel. Exposure to varying weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, humidity, and other seasonal elements. Occasional exposure to stressful or emergency situations requiring calm decision-making and professional response. Frequent travel between campus facilities and occasional operation of College vehicles or security carts, if assigned.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this position:

• Extensive walking throughout campus during assigned patrols, often for prolonged periods.
• Stand for extended periods while monitoring facilities, events, or traffic.
• Climb stairs and navigate uneven sidewalks, parking lots, and outdoor terrain.
• Bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and reach while conducting security inspections or responding to incidents.
• Lift, carry, push, or pull equipment, barricades, supplies, or emergency response items weighing up to 25 pounds on a regular basis and occasionally up to 40 pounds.
• Operate computers, security software, surveillance systems, radios, mobile devices, and other standard office and security equipment.
• Maintain sufficient visual acuity to monitor surveillance equipment, observe individuals and activities, read license plates, identify hazards, and operate safely in both daylight and low-light conditions.
• Hear and communicate effectively in person, by telephone, and via two-way radio in both routine and emergency situations.
• Respond quickly to emergencies by walking or moving rapidly across campus when necessary.
• Maintain manual dexterity sufficient to operate security equipment, door hardware, access control devices, and emergency communication systems.

Normal Working Hours: Variable schedule; 7am-3pm and 3pm-11pm, Monday- Saturday; weekend, holiday, and special event assignments may be required to support College operations and campus safety.
