Full Time Instrumental Music Instructor- Elementary/ Middle School (5th/6th/7th Grade)

Job Title: .5 Elementary/.5 Middle School Instrumental Music Teacher Reports to Building Principal Position Purpose This position will co‑teach 5th Grade Band, direct the 6th Grade Concert band, direct the 7th Grade Concert band, teach lessons on all instruments for 5th through 8th grade students, share honor band responsibilities, help prepare students for solo and ensemble contests, and perform administrative duties. Under the general supervision of the building principal, the teacher will facilitate student success and growth in academic and interpersonal skills through implementing district and state approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress; addressing specific educational needs of individual students by creating a flexible, safe and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents, and administration regarding student progress, expectations and goals. Essential Performance Responsibilities Develop and administer district and state approved curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives. Promote a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction. Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and translate them into engaging learning experiences. Conduct ongoing assessment of student learning and modify instructional methods to fit individual student needs, including students with special needs, and conduct individual and small group instruction as needed. Acquire professional knowledge and stay current by attending seminars, workshops, or professional meetings, or by conducting research. Organize and maintain an accurate record‑keeping, grading, and reporting system for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws. Encourage parental involvement and maintain effective communication with students and parents. Ensure that student conduct conforms to school and district policies and establish standards of behavior needed for a functional learning atmosphere. Coordinate with other professional staff members, especially within grade level and department, to evaluate and assess curriculum and participate in faculty meetings and committees. Select and requisition appropriate books, instructional aids, and other supplies and equipment and maintain inventory records. Supervise students in activities that take place outside of the classroom during the school day, including transportation‑related activities. Administer standardized tests in accordance with district testing programs. Perform other related tasks as assigned by the principal and central office administrators. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, and ability to differentiate instruction. Knowledge of district and state curriculum. Knowledge of data systems, data analysis, and action‑plan formulation. Knowledge of federal and state education laws. Proficiency with computer network systems and software applications. Organizational and coordination skills. Excellent communication skills with students and parents. Self‑evaluation for professional growth. Ability to establish cooperative relationships. Co‑teaching skills in a comprehensive program with shared responsibilities. Qualifications Profile Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Valid Iowa Teaching License with 5‑12 Music Endorsement. Prior experience teaching concert and jazz band, and group lessons at elementary and/or middle school levels. Experience teaching jazz improvisation and beginning rhythm section. Knowledge of and experience using music technology. Performance experience on woodwind or percussion instruments preferred. Effective communication with students and parents, including experience with social media and technology. Ability to co‑teach in a shared program. Physical Requirements Walking, standing, bending, carrying, climbing, lifting minimum of 20 pounds, driving, pushing, pulling, reaching, sitting, stooping. Working Conditions Varied. Terms of Employment 190‑day contract in accordance with the Master Contract. Evaluation In accordance with state code, Iowa Teaching Standards and local performance criteria.
