Assistant Prosecuting Attorney I

Job Summary The primary function of this position is to process complaints from various policy agencies and assist throughout all phases of prosecution, including preparation for litigation, prosecution of criminal trials, and presentation of cases to juries, judges, and other fact finders. Key Responsibilities Review police reports, perform warrant screening, and draft search warrants, petitions, and other legal documents. Provide legal information and advice to police and other governmental agencies. Prepare for litigation proceedings: research the law, write briefs, interview and prepare witnesses, negotiate case resolutions, and develop case strategies. Present and argue cases in district and probate courts. Prosecute all phases of criminal trials, including jury and non‑jury trials, and related hearings. Participate as a member of a team to meet objectives and perform essential duties with or without reasonable accommodations. Be available for irregular hours, on‑call duties, and travel in personal vehicle if required. Qualifications Juris Doctorate Degree. Member in good standing of the State Bar of Michigan. Valid driver’s license and personal vehicle insurance; maintain eligibility to drive per the County’s Vehicle policy. Conditions of Employment Required to serve in an on‑call capacity. Background check required initially and periodically; may include identity verification, criminal record review, educational/ license verification, DMV records, DOJ fingerprint scan, and drug/alcohol testing. Compliance with all county policies and legal requirements. Physical Demands and Work Environment May need to reach with hands and arms, sit, stand, speak, hear, and use hands for handling material. May be exposed to infectious diseases, criminal suspects, or prison inmates. May need to lift or move up to 50 pounds. Skills and Competencies Proficiency in English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and basic math. Fundamental knowledge of basic criminal law. Advanced computer skills for preparing reports and maintaining records. Interpersonal skills to build relationships with co‑workers, customers, and other agencies. Research, problem‑solving, and analytical thinking ability. Strong ethical judgment and integrity. Ability to interpret complex policies and explain them in layman’s terms. Effective meeting facilitation and documentation management skills.
