Part-Time | 28 hours per week; schedule based on clinic and organizational needs Overview Jones Advisors HR Consulting is actively searching for a Medical Assistant on behalf of our client, Urban Ministries. This is a part-time, in-person role in Raleigh, NC. The Medical Assistant provides clinical and administrative support for Urban Ministries of Wake County's Open Door Clinic, helping ensure safe, efficient, and compassionate healthcare services for uninsured adults in Wake County. Reporting to the Clinic Manager, this position supports daily clinic operations through direct patient care, clinical procedures, patient scheduling and communication, electronic medical record management, provider support, and clinic readiness. The Medical Assistant works closely with staff and volunteer healthcare providers and is expected to perform routine Medical Assistant functions with appropriate independence following orientation to Open Door Clinic policies, procedures, and workflows. During a vacancy in the Clinic Manager position, this role will report to the Director of Programs and Operations. What You'll Be Doing Clinical and Patient Care Support
- Obtain and accurately document vital signs, medication information, patient histories, and other relevant clinical information.
- Prepare patients and exam rooms for medical appointments and assist healthcare providers during examinations and procedures as needed.
- Administer vaccines and other medications as directed by an authorized healthcare provider and in accordance with established protocols, demonstrated competency, organizational policies, and applicable requirements.
- Perform point-of-care tests offered by the Open Door Clinic, including urine testing, A1C, glucose testing, and EKGs.
- Accurately document vaccines and other applicable clinical information in Athena and the North Carolina Immunization Registry (NCIR).
- Reinforce provider instructions within the scope of the position.
- Monitor patient and provider needs throughout clinic sessions and respond to routine clinical workflow needs.
- Follow established infection prevention, patient safety, and quality-control procedures.
- Schedule and reschedule patient appointments and assist with coordination of provider schedules.
- Answer and return patient calls and respond to routine patient questions within the scope of the position.
- Monitor and appropriately address or route assigned Athena tasks, messages, and patient communications.
- Assist with coordination of outside laboratory services and other patient care needs.
- Support clinic opening and closing procedures as assigned.
- Identify concerns affecting clinic flow or patient care and communicate them promptly to the Clinic Manager or appropriate healthcare provider.
- Maintain exam room readiness and ensure rooms are appropriately cleaned, stocked, and prepared between patients and for scheduled clinic sessions.
- Serve as a backup resource for vaccine coordination activities as assigned.
- Assist with quality-control activities related to point-of-care testing, vaccines, clinical equipment, and other applicable clinical processes.
- Identify clinical supply, equipment, vaccine, and operational needs and communicate them to the Clinic Manager.
- Welcome and orient clinical volunteers and interns to applicable Open Door Clinic workflows and procedures.
- Provide day-to-day support to volunteer healthcare providers during clinic sessions, including assistance with patient flow, supplies, electronic medical record workflows, and routine clinic needs.
- Serve as a primary point of contact for routine volunteer needs during scheduled clinic sessions and appropriately escalate clinical or operational concerns.
- Orient, mentor, and provide day-to-day guidance to assigned interns or students, as applicable.
- Promote effective collaboration among staff, volunteers, interns, students, and healthcare providers.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Current nationally recognized Medical Assistant certification or credential, such as CMA, RMA, CCMA, or equivalent.
- Minimum of one to two years of directly related Medical Assistant experience in an outpatient, primary care, community health, or similar clinical setting.
- Current BLS/CPR certification or ability to obtain within a timeframe established by UMWC.
- Demonstrated experience with vaccine administration, EKGs, point-of-care testing, vital signs, patient intake, and specimen collection.
- Experience with patient scheduling, electronic medical records, patient communication, and routine medical office responsibilities.
- Ability to organize and prioritize clinical and administrative responsibilities and work with appropriate independence within established protocols and procedures.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and appropriately handle HIPAA-protected information.
- Commitment to providing compassionate and respectful services to uninsured and historically underserved populations.
- Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish strongly preferred due to frequent direct communication with Spanish-speaking patients.
- Experience working in a free clinic, community health center, nonprofit healthcare organization, or other safety-net healthcare setting.
- Experience using Athenahealth or a similar electronic medical record system.
- Experience using NCIR or another immunization registry.
- Experience supporting volunteer healthcare providers, interns, or students.
- Experience with vaccine management, clinical inventory, and point-of-care quality-control processes.
