Public Safety Telecommunicator

Public Safety Telecommunicator Short-term, full‑time telecommunicator position within Winston Salem State University’s Department of Public Safety. The role involves learning and applying FCC regulations, departmental policies, and operating telecommunications equipment to support emergency and non‑emergency communications. Responsibilities Learn and apply FCC rules and regulations related to radio transmissions. Master department policies and procedures for answering, responding, and dispatching calls. Operate required telecommunications and information technology equipment, including radios, phones, alarm panels, CAD systems, and databases. Listen to, interpret, and relay messages from callers accurately. Collect information and provide routine responses to callers according to prescribed guidelines. Respond independently to non‑emergency calls and provide general information. Communicate calmly and concisely with callers and personnel. Transmit radio messages using established protocols and procedures. Use logs, data systems, and standard formats to record and retrieve information. Create reports and maintain accurate data entry. Qualifications High School diploma or equivalent. Certification as a Division of Criminal Information computer operator or ability to obtain certification within 45 days of employment. Basic Telecommunicator Certification (North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission) or ability to obtain certification within one year of employment. Valid U.S. driver’s license. Ability to work during adverse weather or other emergencies. Physical ability to perform job duties as required. Workplace & Compensation Location: Patricia D. Norris Public Safety Building, Room 203, Winston Salem, NC. Hours: 40 hours per week, variable based on personnel needs. Salary: $25 per hour. Position Type: Temporary Full‑Time, Non‑Exempt.
