26-27 MLE School Bus Riding Monitor

Position Summary The Bus Monitor ensures the safety of children as they are transported from the Neighborhood (proximity) School to the schools where the English Language Learner Programs are located. Riding Bus Monitors are assigned to a bus route and are present from the first pick up stop through the last drop off. Riding Bus Monitor assignments are determined on an annual basis based on program enrollment and program needs. Essential Functions & Responsibilities Assist children in getting on the bus and to assigned seats Take attendance as children enter the bus Ensure that students have appropriate name tags Ensure children remain seated during transport Maintain order and behavior of children on the bus so the driver will not be distracted from safe driving Report any unsafe behavior to the Principal and MLE Director Maintain a positive and calm attitude and use a quiet voice while on the job Assist the children in getting off the bus safely Release children only to persons who are parents/guardians or those designated by the parent/guardian Allow only students in grades three and up to walk to their homes from the neighborhood without an adult with parental permission Ensure that those students in grades K - through 2 who are not met by a designated adult are returned to the sending school for parental contact; contact the school when this occurs Check the bus to assure there are no children remaining on the bus at the end of each route Inform MLE Office of any changes in ridership Inform MLE Office upon Monitor absence as soon as possible Sign in at the school office at the start of the run; sign out at the school office at the end of the run on a daily basis Other duties as required Physical Requirements Physical Strength Requirements: may involve lifting or carrying items up to 10 lbs Posture & Movement Requirements: Frequently Standing Sensory Requirements: Ability to perceive written information (near vision); Ability to hear and understand verbal instructions Qualifications, Knowledge, Abilities, & Skills Fluency in English and ability to communicate effectively Ability to maintain a safe and orderly environment Ability to establish good working relationship with children, parents, bus driver, and other staff Bilingual preferred Reporting Relationships Position Reports to: The Director and Assistant Director of Multilingual Learner Education Terms of Employment Position Type: Seasonal/Yearly Employment August 2026-June 2027 Location: DISTRICT WIDE Union Affiliation: Non Union FLSA Classification: Non Exempt Pre-Employment Requirements MA Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) Clearance Fingerprints The Somerville Public Schools does not discriminate in its programs, facilities, or employment or educational opportunities on the basis of race, color, age, religion, disability, pregnancy, home status, marital/civil union status, sex/gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, citizenship status, place of birth, national origin, ancestry, cultural identity, genetics or military status, and does not tolerate any form of retaliation, or bias-based intimidation, threat or harassment that demeans individuals’ dignity or interferes with their ability to learn or work. #J-18808-Ljbffr Somerville Public Schools
