Fort Carson (formerly Camp Carson)

Established in 1942, following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. Camp Carson was named in honor of the legendary Army scout, General Christopher "Kit" Carson, who explored much of the West in the 1800s. Fort Carson's beautiful scenery has made it one of the most requested duty stations in the U.S. Army. It is considered the second most popular CONUS duty station, after Fort Lewis, Washington, and adopted "Best Hometown in the Army" as its motto in 2007. Base population is estimated around 14,000.

Requirements

• The Family Medicine Physician shall provide inpatient and outpatient Family Medicine services to authorized beneficiaries in accordance with established principles, practices and standards. Family Medicine Physician shall be the primary care manager (PCM) for a designated group of patients. Family Medicine Physician shall be required to treat patients from other provider panels. Family Medicine Physician shall have inpatient admitting responsibilities and perform inpatient rounds. The Family Medicine Physician shall perform chart reviews and attend medical staff meetings as part of the normal workday.
• Family Medicine Physician shall provide initial emergency medical care required to any civilian, military, or military beneficiary requiring it in life-threatening situations. Patients shall be transferred to the appropriate military or civilian hospital when the attending physician determines that the patient is stable enough to make the trip.
• The Family Medicine Physician shall interview patients, perform evaluations, diagnose illnesses, and prescribe treatments and consultations for patients of all ages with any symptom, illness, injury, or condition. Family Medicine Physicians may admit and may provide care to patients in the intensive care setting in conformance with MTF policies. They may assess, stabilize, and determine disposition of patients with emergent conditions and perform minor surgery and refer patients to military or civilian hospitals for more complex medical problems. The Family Medicine Physician shall provide comprehensive and continuing health and medical care services e.g. diagnosis, prevention, therapy, maintenance and rehabilitation. The Family Medicine Physician shall manage the health care needs of patients with serious illnesses through consultation or direct referral to specialty physicians. The Family Medicine Physician shall perform only those services for which privileges have been granted by the EACH credentials committee. The Family Medicine Physician shall write prescriptions only for medications within the scope of work of the provider. Medications beyond the scope of work of the Family Medicine HCP require interaction with physicians from other clinics.
• The Family Medicine Physician shall complete medical records, forms and documents.
• The Family Medicine Physician shall take the patient history and perform medical surveillance physicals on appointed military and Department of Army Civilians. The Family Medicine Physician shall request lab tests, Xrays, pharmaceuticals, etc. via the CHCS computer system. The Family Medicine Physician shall request consultations and procedures as considered appropriate. The Family Medicine Physician shall study health records and evaluate the significance of total clinical evidence. The Family Medicine Physician shall read and abide by AR 40-3 Medical, Dental, and Veterinary Care, AR 40-66 Medical Records and AR40-68 Quality Assurance Administration.
• The Family Medicine Physician shall make periodic follow-up examinations of patients to determine progress and reaction to treatment, review clinical evidence to detect deviation from normal disease course, and determine the patient's progress. When deemed appropriate, the Family Medicine Physician shall consult with other physicians concerning the significance of symptoms and interpretations, prepare clinical reports of each examination, consultation and diagnosis, and record other pertinent data in the appropriate format. The Family Medicine Physician shall maintain accurate and up-to-date records, including daily man-hours.
• Shall be capable of performing the full range of Family Medicine services including diagnosis and treatment of urgent/acute diseases/injuries to include but not limited to: Skin, Head, Eyes, Ears, Nose, Throat, Neck, Cardiovascular System, Pulmonary system, Gastrointestinal system, Musculoskeletal system, Genitourinary system, Reproductive system, Lymphopoietic system, Central nervous system, Endocrine system.
• The Family Medicine Physician shall use accepted medical practices and standards. Independently evaluate, diagnose, and provide medical treatment to a broad-age range of patients enrolled in the Family Medicine Clinic. Determines the need for tests and provides emergency care to accident victims. Shall conduct examinations of children and adults to determine the need for x-rays and lab tests and interpret findings and test results. The HCP shall prescribe and administer treatments for colds, infectious diseases, and other diseases. The HCP shall provide all medical care on difficult or complex problems e.g. cardiac conditions and cystic fibrosis. The HCP shall be required to perform physicals and sexual abuse exams; and determine the need to hospitalize patients or to refer patients to a specialty clinic, consultant or other hospital. The Family Medicine Physician shall monitor patient progress during local hospital treatment and upon the patient's return from other hospitals. When appropriate, the HCP shall care for patients via telephone consultation. The Family Medicine Physician shall serve as the attending physician in the inpatient unit when on call or as needed; prescribe and/or provide treatment to patients, and determine when they may be released from EACH. The Family Medicine Physician shall provide medical care for patients on the ward or ICU as needed.
• The Family Medicine Physician shall be capable to diagnosis and management (D&M); and performing the procedures as a minimum: Obstetrical Care, Pulmonary function testing and interpretation, Basic synovial fluid analysis, Basic spirometry, Cardiac stress test, Venipuncture, Electrocardiogram (EKG) interpretation, Mechanical ventilator management, Administer immunotherapy (allergy shots), Topical and local infiltration anesthesia, Lumbar puncture, Endotracheal intubation, Intraosseous catheter / trocar insertion, Paracentesis, Thoracentesis, Nerve block anesthesia, Cardioversion, elective, Central venous catheter insertion, Newborn umbilical vessel catheterization, Flexible sigmoidoscopy with/without biopsy, (Limited) Moderate Conscious Sedation, Intrauterine device (IUD) insertion / removal. The Family Medicine Physician shall possess, and maintain the necessary skills and certifications to perform these tasks.

Qualifications

• Must have graduated from an accredited Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) program to include a Family Medicine residency program. Grandfathered Family Medicine Physicians are not acceptable.
• Must be Board Certified in Family Medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine or American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians. The Family Medicine Physician may be a new graduate of a Family Medicine Residency Program and will at a minimum be Board Eligible.
• Must have a minimum of one (1) year of full-time experience as a practicing Family Medicine Physician in the last two (2) years. Residency/Internship time counts as practicing experience. Time spent in an administrative capacity as a claims reviewer, medical school instructor, consultant, internet or telemedicine physician, medical director, etc. does not qualify as practicing time.
• Possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted license to practice medicine in one of the 50 United States, District of Columbia, Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam or U.S. Virgin Islands.
• Possess and maintain at all times a current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration number and BNDD number as required by state agencies where the provider is licensed.
• Possess and maintain certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS); Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) required if providing pediatric call and/or working in L&D. All certifications must be American Heart Association (AHA).
