About the Position

Job Title: Registered Nurse (RN) Profession: Nursing Specialty: Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Rotating Hours per Shift: 8 hours Experience: Minimum 2 years of experience License: Required Certifications: BLS ACLS PALS Must-Have: Prior PACU experience, level 1 trauma PACU preferred. Description: This position is for a Registered Nurse specializing in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit. The unit has a total of 20 Pre-op bays and 24 PACU/Phase II bays. All staff rotate through Pre-op, PACU, Phase II, and boarders. The nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:3 in Pre-op, 1:2 in PACU, and 1:3 in Phase II. Common cases include general surgery, plastics, dental, ENT, urology, neuro surgery, surgical oncology, ophthalmology, orthopedic trauma, joint replacements, OB/GYN, thoracic, and bariatrics. Experience with emergency medical records (EMR) systems, specifically EPIC, is necessary. Charge nurses do not typically take assignments but may do so when required. Nurse aides are present in the unit, with typical staffing being 5 PCAs in Pre-op, 2 in PACU, and 2 in Phase II. Experience with respiratory therapy equipment, including vents, CPAP, and BiPAP, is required. ICU patients may recover in the PACU, depending on throughput and capacity. Registered Nurses are responsible for reading cardiac strips. Staff may float to other pre/post departments within the facility as needed. Call requirements typically amount to around 20-24 hours per month, and scheduling is based on employee availability. Employees may also be required to work one holiday shift and one holiday call shift per season. The call response time is expected to be within 1 hour. Scrub color and dress code adhere to hospital standards. Orientation consists of departmental specific training, including 1 day in Pre-op, 1 day in PACU, and 1 day in Phase II.
