FIREFIGHTER/PARAMEDIC

Firefighter/ParamedicThis employee provides general duty firefighting work in combating, extinguishing and preventing fires and operating firefighting apparatus. An employee in this class is responsible for the protection of life and property through firefighting activities; rescue operations; fire prevention inspections and administration of emergency medical care in emergency situations. An employee in this class may be required to perform duties under hazardous conditions, which involve extreme exertion, smoke and cramped surroundings. Work may involve assignment as a driver of firefighting vehicles or rescue vehicles, and the operation of a firefighting and medical equipment. Work also involves inspection and maintenance of apparatus, equipment and facilities quarters and participation in supervised training and drills. Provides emergency medical care to the sick and injured utilizing the skills, training and knowledge required of a certified Paramedic. Work is performed under the supervision of the Company Officer and the Battalion Chief and under the medical direction of the City's Medical Director.Essential functions include responding to emergency alarms, laying and connecting hoses, operating firefighting equipment, entering premises for firefighting, rescue and salvage operations, driving fire apparatus and rescue vehicles, performing salvage operations, conducting fire prevention inspections, participating in training drills, attending public gatherings, performing general maintenance and minor repairs, providing emergency medical care, and generating and completing various records, reports, and checklists.Minimum qualifications include graduation from a standard high school or its equivalent, holding a valid State of Florida Firefighter Certificate, possessing a valid State of Florida Paramedic Certification, holding a valid State of Florida Class "E" Driver's License, and possessing all valid certifications necessary to perform as a Paramedic within the City of Oakland Park, including CPR, ACLS, PALS or PEPP, EVOC, and Candidate Physical Ability Test card/certification.Preferred qualifications include being a Broward County resident and holding an Associates Degree or higher.Note: All candidates must meet physical requirements of National Fire Protection Standard 1582 and must be a non-user of tobacco products for at least one year immediately preceding application.The City of Oakland Park offers a comprehensive benefits package including 100% contribution to employee cost and 50% contribution to dependent cost for medical plan, 100% contribution to employee cost for Dental HMO Plan, Florida Retirement System, $50,000 of basic life and accidental death and dismemberment insurance, short and long-term disability, vision, voluntary employee, spousal and dependent life insurance, identity theft, legal assistance, and other supplemental insurance plans.
