REPORTS TO: Principal This position is for the 26/27 school year and is probationary. When a position is filled after the opening of school by an individual who was not employed by the District in the previous school year, that employee will receive a one-year temporary contract.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Behavior Support Specialist works closely with administration in a coordinator capacity to support and maintain a positive, safe, achievement-oriented, and supportive school culture. The Behavior Support Specialist will be instrumental in establishing and reinforcing high expectations for positive student behavior while being a preventative systems leader focused on behavior instruction, SEL, restorative practices, staff coaching, and MTSS support, including:

Must clear online background check and FBI Fingerprint check through Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
SALARY:
Placement on Licensed Teacher salary schedule based upon previous teaching experience and highest degree and college credits earned after student teaching was completed. Current Board approved Licensed Teacher Salary Schedule, and Salary Placement Policy are available for review on our district website at Highest initial step placement on the Licensed Salary Schedule is Step 9. BENEFITS:
Employees who are scheduled to work 30 or more hours per week are eligible to obtain district health benefits which include medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance and supplemental benefits. Positions that qualify for health benefits also qualify for leave which could include vacation and daily leave to be determined by the position and number of days assigned. Sheridan School District No. 2 is a public employer and participates in the Colorado Public Employees' Retirement Association (PERA). - Systems/data leadership
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Support a structured, positive, safe and creative school culture
- Partner with parents, families and school staff to build school-wide community
- Coordinate and implement a school-wide positive restorative justice system with meaningful incentives and consequences
- Support in facilitating faculty and staff professional development related to school culture
- Oversee the development of Positive Behaviors Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Restorative Justice (RJ)
- Accurately monitor and analyze daily student attendance, homework and discipline records; create new systems and structures to proactively address school's areas of needs
- Work closely and effectively with students who have challenges and their families; partner with school social worker and teachers to execute individualized interventions when needed
- Conducts home visits, when necessary, for disciplinary and/or congratulatory purposes
- Participate in regular mental health and support team meetings
- Responsible for Restorative Justice conversations during our after-school re-focus program
- Other duties as assigned
- Administers disciplinary procedures in accordance with school policies and state laws; receives referrals and confers with students, parents, teachers, community agencies, and law enforcement; responds to and resolves parent, student, and staff concerns and complaints; handles student discipline referrals from staff; serves on discipline task forces as assigned
- Assist the School-wide Discipline Task Force with implementation of Education Programs
- Document and implement Response to Intervention (RTI) & Multi-Tier System Support (MTSS) plans
- Encourage multiple avenues to communicate with students such as Restorative Practice and Character Education
- Performs a variety of administrative duties to assist the Principal in managing the school
- Maintains records of student disciplinary action taken and student attendance
- Monitors students during lunch, recess, passing periods, and other activities; instructs students in appropriate behavior; disciplines students in accordance with established guidelines
- Supervises activities, including evening activities as assigned
- Attends meetings of parents and other groups as assigned
- Works with the Principal to establish a safe and secure learning environment for students
- Prepares and maintains a variety of district, county, state, and federal records and reports
- Supervise before school traffic, playground, lunch duty and after school departure and traffic as needed
- Execute any other tasks to ensure the safety and well-being of students, teachers, and staff
- Reads, interprets, applies, and explains rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
- Maintains a safe and orderly learning environment
- Work in partnership with Student Success Coordinators to align behavior expectations with instructional goals.
- Support teachers with classroom management strategies, restorative practices, and behavior intervention techniques.
- Assist in developing and implementing Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to create a positive school climate.
- Lead implementation and monitoring of Tier 1 PBIS systems schoolwide
- Analyze behavior, attendance, and climate data to identify trends and preventative interventions
- Coordinate behavior screening and progress monitoring within MTSS structures
- Development of Behavior Intervention Plans
- Support implementation fidelity of individualized behavior plans
- Utilize trauma-informed and de-escalation strategies during student crises
- Support staff in safe crisis response procedures
- Participate in crisis prevention and intervention training
- Model effective classroom management and restorative practices for staff
- Coach teachers in proactive behavior supports and relationship-building strategies
- Provide consultation regarding classroom behavior systems
- Facilitate social-emotional skill development groups focused on self-regulation, conflict resolution, and executive functioning skills
- Train staff on the implementation of district approved SEL curriculum
- Implement trauma-informed practices that prioritize student connection, regulation, and restoration
- Apply principles of teaching/learning to enhance student achievement
- Utilize teaching methods that are appropriate for the objectives and learners
- Modify instruction to meet student needs
- Communicate effectively with learners
- Provide for and maintain student involvement during instruction
- Use the measure of student outcomes to assure the effectiveness of instruction
- Communicate effectively student progress to student and parent/guardian and Tier 1 teacher
- Attend to tasks in a manner that maximizes instruction
- Maintain necessary student records
- Assist in planning for appropriate use of volunteers/aides as assigned
- Establish clear expectations for appropriate behavior
- Establish consequences for inappropriate behavior
- Build students' capacity to succeed in a Tier 1 classroom
- Participate in professional growth opportunities
- Adhere to the code of ethics of the teaching professional of the State of Colorado
- Recognize problems and actively contribute to their resolutions
- Collaborate with others to fulfill responsibilities related to building and district goals and priorities

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Required
- Colorado Department of Education (CDE) licensure in Education, Social Work, School Counselor, or similar field
- BA/BS degree
- Four years of experience working with student in K-12 education
- Prior experience in an urban, high poverty and/or turnaround school
- Outstanding presentation and facilitation skills
- Exhibited leadership in working with staff, students, and the community
- Ability to effectively interpret student/school data and identify areas of strength, need and growth
- Commitment to accountability, professional development for instructors and student success
- Strong interpersonal skills (communication, problem solving, conflict management, collaboration) to share instructional approaches and provide advice, mentoring, and coaching to teachers and other staff
- Strong organizational skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
- Master's degree
- Administration Certification
- Bilingual Spanish/English desirable.
- Is flexible and adaptable to change; demonstrates self-accountability
- Demonstrated knowledge and skill regarding the components of effective instruction.
- Demonstrated knowledge of developmental needs of students, behavior management and trauma informed care.
- Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills.
