Shift Supervisor

Chalk Point Generating Station, situated in Aquasco, Maryland, is a key power generation facility with a total capacity of approximately 1,618 MW. The station features a diverse lineup of nine generating units, including seven gas turbines and two steam turbines. This strategic configuration enhances efficiency and reliability, ensuring the station effectively meets regional energy demands.

Opportunity Summary

The Shift Supervisor plays an important role in overseeing and training assigned shift personnel in all aspects of plant operations, including normal operations, upset conditions, and regulatory compliance at federal, state, and local levels. They ensure operational efficiency by writing, reviewing, and revising operating procedures to meet regulatory requirements and best practices. Additionally, they provide crucial direction to plant O&M personnel during startup, shutdown, and regular operations, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and promptly addressing any identified hazards.

Your scope of responsibility as Shift Supervisor will include the following primary functions:

• Provide oversight and training to assigned shift personnel in normal plant operations, operation during upset conditions, applicable Federal, State, and Local regulatory requirements, and plant startups and shutdowns.
• Write, review, and revise operating procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and operational best practices.
• Oversee and provide functional direction to plant O&M personnel regarding plant operations, including startup and shutdown of main plant equipment and auxiliaries.
• Ensure that all site safety requirements and procedures are properly implemented and consistently observed. Identify safety hazards and take corrective actions as necessary.
• Conduct periodic tours of the plant to inspect equipment, provide direction, supervision, and feedback to employees, and ensure adherence to safety rules and plant procedures.
• Report upset conditions or anomalies in plant status to the Operations Manager or Lead Shift Supervisor.
• Manage plant scheduling, manpower loading, and maintenance planning and execution.
• Perform emergency operations to maintain electric service and safeguard station equipment.
• Maintain the plant’s operating log and other records accurately and timely. Approve and issue equipment Lock-out/Tag-outs as required.
• Serve as the site representative after normal hours.
• Provide supervision and direction to Plant Operators, assisting in their orientation, training, and development.
• Assist the Operations Manager in department administration, power plant management, and provide advice and counsel to both Operations and Maintenance Managers regarding the technical and administrative conduct of shift operations.
• Become the lead system representative on assigned systems.
• Support the Administration, Engineering, and Maintenance departments.
• Complete other assigned tasks as required.

Working Relationships

The Shift Supervisor reports to the Operations Manager and receives guidance from other plant management. This role involves supervising and overseeing plant shift personnel, as well as coordinating with other plant employees.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, climbing stairs and ladders, working from elevated platforms and walkways at varying heights, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds.

Power plant environment that may involve entering confined spaces, crawling through narrow areas, and handling hazardous materials, with exposure to fumes, extreme temperatures, and noise. Work may include high heat near equipment and varying outdoor weather conditions.

Some duties may require the use of protective equipment, which can include hard hats, safety glasses, and eye protection, air masks/respirators, ear protection, chemical suits, flame-resistant clothing (FRC), hot gloves, high-voltage protective gear, and fall protection. Fit testing for respirators may be required. Strict smoking restrictions apply in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program, which includes a post-offer physical examination, drug screening, and post-employment random drug screening.

Work Schedule

The Shift Supervisor works a rotating 12-hour schedule, three to four shifts per week, with day shifts from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM and night shifts from 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM, supporting continuous 24/7 operations. This position will require extended hours, flexible shifts, weekends, holidays, and on-call availability as needed to support plant operations and business needs.

Compensation

This position offers an annual base salary ranging from $135,000 to $150,000 and includes eligibility for an annual performance bonus.

Operational Expertise and Leadership Competencies

• An Associate degree in Power Plant Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Process Technology, or a related field is desired, but not required. Alternatively, equivalent technical training in industrial maintenance or instrumentation and control, as well as relevant industry or military experience, may be considered.
• Proven track record as a Control Room Operator in a power plant or similar industrial setting, with expertise in monitoring and controlling plant operations, responding to alarms, and maintaining operational efficiency and compliance.
• Strong understanding of power plant operations under normal and upset conditions, including regulatory requirements at the federal, state, and local levels.
• Demonstrated leadership in overseeing and coordinating O&M personnel, supervising shift activities, and managing plant scheduling, manpower loading, and maintenance planning to ensure reliable and efficient performance.
• Unwavering commitment to safety, with the ability to implement and enforce site safety requirements, identify hazards, and take corrective actions as necessary.
• Proficient in writing, reviewing, and revising operating procedures to ensure adherence to regulatory requirements and operational best practices.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to conduct plant tours, provide clear direction and feedback to employees, report plant status to management, and collaborate effectively across departments and stakeholders.
• Must possess a valid, unrestricted U.S. driver’s license and ensure it remains in good standing at all times.
