Speech and Language Pathologist (PRN)

Speech-Language Pathologist provides differential diagnosis and therapeutic services by assessing and treating patients in the Acute and Swing Bed settings with central or peripheral disorders of speech, language, voice, or swallowing. They work closely with other staff (including Physical therapy, Occupational therapy, Respiratory therapy, Nursing, Dietician, and Radiology staff) to ensure patients make the most of their rehabilitation experience.

Duties:

  • Defines patient’s degree and type of speech, language, voice or swallowing impairment by selecting and administering the most appropriate test instruments and preparing written or computerized diagnostic reports
  • Sets appropriate and attainable goals for patient and documents progress toward goals
  • Counsels patients and families regarding speech, language or swallowing disorder and provides them with treatment options
  • Follows treatment plan with frequency and duration as set upon evaluation
  • Re-assesses patient as required (6 days inpatient, 30 days SNF) and modifies therapy plan as needed
  • Coordinates treatment with patient and other staff members
  • Collaborates with other disciplines for best treatment outcomes for patient
  • Attends staff meetings as directed by supervisor
  • Conducts in-services for nursing staff
  • Participates in quality assurance program and makes recommendations regarding quality improvement
  • Meets with case management regarding discharge planning of patient
  • Completes continuing education as required by licensing board
  • Assists with clerical duties as needed
  • Maintains safe environment for customers and staff

Requirements:

Education Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree in Speech-Language pathology

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Louisiana Speech Pathology license
  • ASHA certificate of clinical competence
  • CPR certification

Exposure:

  • Speech pathologists are exposed to blood and bodily fluids
