Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (Full Time)

Position Summary Boston Medical Center (BMC) is a leading safety‑net hospital and the largest provider of trauma and emergency services in New England, with a strong focus on community‑based, academic care. The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMH‑NP) will work within the Department of Psychiatry, delivering comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, counseling, and psychopharmacologic management in both outpatient and community settings. Essential Responsibilities / Duties Provide direct patient assessment, counseling, and teaching according to established collaborative protocols. Perform psychiatric evaluations and evidence‑based psychopharmacologic treatment following clinical guidelines. Continuously evaluate patient safety, initiate referrals to higher levels of care, and coordinate with receiving facilities. Conduct discharge appointments, medication reconciliation, and follow‑up to transition patients back to outpatient services. Maintain accurate electronic medical records, order and interpret laboratory tests, and develop individualized care plans. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including primary care providers, to provide integrated community health services. Provide patient education on health maintenance, prevention, and promotion. Interpret community resources and facilitate appropriate referrals. Seek and provide consultative services as needed. Professional Development Assist in developing, implementing, evaluating, and revising nurse practitioner guidelines, policies, and protocols. Demonstrate leadership in problem solving and directing clinical personnel. Stay current with legislation affecting health care delivery and the nurse practitioner role. Serve on nursing and hospital committees, providing relevant information. Continuously assess personal learning needs and maintain required competencies. Educate patients, families, and professionals through educational materials, in‑services, and formal lectures. Job Requirements Education Master’s degree in nursing; completion of an accredited nurse practitioner program. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Registered Nurse license in Massachusetts with authorization for expanded practice. Registered with the ANCC or another accredited organization for Nurse Practitioners. DEA registration for prescription‑writing privileges. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Experience Minimum of two years of clinical nursing in a behavioral health setting, with preference for at least one year of psychiatric nurse practitioner experience and/or substance use disorder treatment. Knowledge and Skills Expert clinical judgment and self‑directed initiative. Strong critical thinking, problem‑solving, and conflict‑resolution skills. Fluency in English, both verbal and written. Ability to apply adult learning principles for patient education. Proficiency in assessing patient safety and determining escalation to higher care. Organizational skills for prioritization and efficient work completion. Effective interpersonal communication with health‑care team, patients, and families. Computer proficiency for data entry and interpretation. Physical capability to meet job responsibilities for the patient population served. Compensation Range $112,000.00 – $162,500.00 (base salary estimated based on qualifications; final offer considers education, experience, skills, and market factors).
