Job Title: Generator Technician  Department: Field Service / Maintenance  Reports To: Service Manager / Operations Manager

Job Summary

The Generator Technician installs, maintains, diagnoses, and repairs standby, portable, and industrial generators and related power equipment. This role requires strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills, along with the ability to work independently in the field on residential, commercial, or industrial job sites.

Key Responsibilities

• Install, inspect, service, and repair generators, transfer switches, and related electrical/mechanical components
• Perform routine and preventive maintenance, including oil changes, filter replacements, battery testing, and load bank testing
• Diagnose engine, electrical, and control system malfunctions using diagnostic tools and software
• Troubleshoot and repair issues related to fuel systems, cooling systems, exhaust systems, and voltage regulators
• Read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, and manufacturer service manuals
• Perform startup and commissioning of new generator installations
• Test automatic transfer switches (ATS) and ensure proper system integration
• Maintain accurate service records, work orders, and parts/materials used per job
• Communicate with customers regarding system status, repairs, and maintenance recommendations
• Follow all OSHA, NFPA, and manufacturer safety guidelines
• Maintain company vehicle, tools, and parts inventory
• Respond to emergency service calls, including outages, often on short notice or during off-hours
• Participate in on-call rotation as needed

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; technical/trade school certification preferred
• 2+ years of generator, diesel/gas engine, or electrical/mechanical service experience preferred
• Manufacturer certifications a plus (Generac, Cummins, Caterpillar, Kohler, etc.)
• Valid driver's license with clean driving record
• Strong understanding of electrical systems, including single-phase and three-phase power
• Ability to pass background check and drug screening

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift 50+ lbs regularly
• Comfortable working outdoors, in tight spaces, or at heights
• Standing, kneeling, bending, and working in varying weather conditions
• Ability to safely handle fuel, batteries, and electrical components

Preferred Skills

• Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting aptitude
• Experience with both residential standby and industrial/commercial generators
• Familiarity with remote monitoring systems
• Strong customer service and communication skills
• Low-voltage or controls experience a plus
