Sports Medicine Physician (Independent Contractor)

Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP), known as the \"First and Finest,\" is the oldest continuously operating Navy hospital and serves as a premier military treatment facility in the Hampton Roads region. As a primary referral center for military treatment facilities on the East Coast and in Europe, NMCP supports a large beneficiary population that includes active duty service members, retirees, and family members. The medical center operates 102 medical/surgical/obstetric/ICU beds and 32 adult mental health beds, offers 18 operating rooms with 12 staffed daily, and supports 13 graduate medical education programs with approximately 250 residents annually. NMCP is also the only Level II trauma center in the Military Health System and provides comprehensive orthopedic care through its Bone and Joint Sports Medicine Institute.

Position Overview

The contract Sports Medicine Physician will provide comprehensive outpatient musculoskeletal and sports medicine care in support of the Bone and Joint Sports Medicine Institute at NMCP. The physician will evaluate, diagnose, and manage acute and chronic orthopedic and sports-related conditions affecting active-duty service members, retirees, and eligible beneficiaries. This role requires strong clinical judgment, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a readiness-focused approach to restoring function, improving performance, and supporting return to duty, activity, or sport.

Duties include:

* Perform comprehensive histories, physical examinations, diagnostic assessments, and treatment planning for a wide range of musculoskeletal and sports medicine conditions.

* Evaluate overuse injuries, acute athletic injuries, concussion-related presentations, joint and soft tissue disorders, and other conditions impacting readiness and performance.

* Order and interpret diagnostic studies and coordinate referrals, rehabilitation plans, and follow-up care with orthopedic surgery, physical therapy, radiology, and other specialty services.

* Provide non-operative sports medicine management, including evidence-based treatment recommendations, activity modification, patient education, and procedural interventions within scope and privileging requirements.

* Document all encounters in the electronic health record and support quality, safety, and multidisciplinary collaboration consistent with military treatment facility standards.

Qualifications

* M.D. or D.O. and successful completion of postgraduate training.

* Must have a current, valid, unrestricted medical license in at least one U.S. state, territory, or commonwealth.

* A minimum of three (3) years of full-time clinical experience in Orthopedics or Sports Medicine within the last five (5) years.

* Board Certified in Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, Preventive Medicine, or Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

* Must have successfully completed a minimum one-year Sports Medicine fellowship or hold a Certificate of Added/Additional Qualification in Sports Medicine.

* Must have a current individual Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration

* Must maintain current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; additional life support certifications may be required.

* This is a contract position working at a military facility. Must meet all credentialing, privileging, and background requirements, including U.S. citizenship if required by the installation.

Work Schedule

Provider shall be required to work a total of 1,912 hours per 12-month period of performance described in Paragraph 2. Scheduling is always based on the needs of NMCP and must be coordinated through the government scheduling officer. While it is anticipated that Provider shall be scheduled to work 80 hours per two-week period, Royster and NMCP are under no obligation to do so.
