Opportunity This field position is based in California. The role focuses on developing, implementing, and managing the company’s environmental programs, including hazardous waste, safety and health across all retail stores in the state. Responsibilities Develop, implement and manage the company’s environmental programs. Develop, implement and monitor the hazardous waste program in California. Implement and manage the company’s safety and health programs in all retail stores in California, providing training and auditing via store audits. Support the company’s environmental, health and safety programs. Evaluate retail store locations against federal, state, and industry‑specific environmental requirements and guidelines. Report progress to the Manager of Store Safety regarding environmental program development and implementation. Partner with retail store operation leaders (District Manager or Regional Director) to conduct training and auditing of environmental programs. Participate in field leadership conference calls. Work with Regional Human Resources to train new Store Managers and District Managers. Arrange follow‑up meetings after new leaders assume roles to ensure locations are audit compliant. Conduct store visits to ensure compliance with California’s hazardous waste program. Assist in implementing, managing, and developing systems to determine hazardous classification of products and proper disposal. Conduct on‑site audits of environmental programs in stores. Analyze and recap audit results on a regular basis. Identify, direct, and supervise actions when urgent environmental issues arise. Assist with development and implementation of environmental policies to ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations. Communicate directly with government inspectors and regulators regarding the company’s environmental programs, as necessary. Stay informed on trends in California compliance and act as a resource expert on hazardous waste and related programs. Collaborate with internal legal and compliance partners to ensure successful execution of environmental programs. Provide strategic direction and oversight of environmental programs in California. Investigate root causes of environmental non‑compliance in stores. Ensure regulatory and internal reporting is submitted on time and accurately. Provide technical guidance and expertise to business partners on environmental compliance. Represent the company at external environmental forums and benchmarking groups. Minimum Requirements 3‑5 years’ experience in Environmental, Health and Safety, or retail operations. Strong people skills: ability to quickly build relationships and communicate with multiple internal and external partners. Analytical thinking and problem‑solving skills; ability to creatively solve problems, innovate, prioritize work, and meet deadlines. Detail‑oriented with ability to coordinate multiple priorities in a fast‑paced dynamic environment. Demonstrated ability to interface effectively with regulators and employees. Ability to interpret complex regulatory issues and provide recommended courses of action. Demonstrated ability to mentor, coach, and build competence in a dynamic environment. Ability to present complex information in an easily understood manner. Flexible schedule and willingness to travel 75% of the time (overnight stays). Preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. Professional certifications such as GSP, ASP, and CSP.
