Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP)—a student loan payment reimbursement program. Award amounts may reach $200,000 and the eligibility period can be one to five years. Applicants must meet the specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit the EDRP application within four months of appointment. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply. Qualifications To qualify for this position, candidates must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Candidates pending completion of training or license requirements may be considered for selection; however, full hire requires completion of all requirements. Physicians currently employed at VA who meet the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to meet the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements United States citizenship. Non‑citizens may only be appointed when no qualified citizens are available in accordance with VA policy. Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Current full and unrestricted medical or surgical license in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. Residency training in an accredited core specialty that leads to board certification, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Alternately, one year of post‑medical‑school training (first year of residency or transitional year) followed by two years of independent practice under a full license is acceptable, or non‑U.S. residency training followed by a minimum of three years of independent practice in the United States. Board certification in Anatomic Pathology or Neuropathology is preferred. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Meet physical standards for the position; a physical examination is required prior to placement. This is a designated drug‑testing position, with random testing for illegal drug use after appointment. Require lifting 15–44 pounds; pushing, reaching above shoulder height, use of fingers and both hands, walking and standing for 3–5 hours, kneeling, rapid mental and muscular coordination, depth perception, and color discrimination. Hearing aid use is permitted. Duties Serve as the neuropathologist for the VA National PTSD Brain Bank, overseeing and performing neuropathological workups, tissue distribution, and data management. Assist with neuropathological workups for other VA and Boston University brain banks and provide clinical service on the surgical neuropathology service for the Boston VA Healthcare System. Engage in academic activities, including clinical and basic research—investigator‑initiated or collaborative—and teaching medical students, residents, fellows, and non‑Pathology faculty. Allocate up to 60% effort to the PTSD Brain Bank, 20% to other clinical duties, and at least 20% to independent research time. Pay and Benefits Competitive salary with annual performance bonus and regular salary increases. Paid time off: 50–55 days per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 federal holidays, and up to 5 days for CME). Retirement benefits include a traditional federal pension (5‑year vesting), federal 401(k) with up to 5% VA contribution, and a range of federal health/vision/dental/life/long‑term care insurance that can be carried into retirement. Full‑time, unrestricted U.S. medical license and possible $1,000 annual CME reimbursement for full‑time board‑certified physicians. Free liability protection with tail coverage; no physician employment contract and no restrictions on moonlighting. Full‑time work schedule; details will be discussed with the supervisor.
