Laboratory Assistant

Assist with laboratory procedures at the Student Health Center. Collect specimens and perform laboratory tests on samples.

Salary Grade: 09

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Receives patients and answers phone calls.
• Instructs patients in collection of specimens.
• Collects capillary and venous human blood specimens.
• Processes and prepares clinical laboratory specimens.
• Performs computer data entry of tests and generates statements.
• Operates electrocardiograph equipment.
• Orders and stocks supplies.
• Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED 1 year experience directly related to duties listed above. -or- Any equivalent combination of related experience and/or education approved by the Department of Human Resources Management.

Preferred Qualifications:

Completion of an approved phlebotomy training course.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of clinical laboratory terminology and infection control techniques. Basic computer skills. Previous working knowledge with laboratory information and/or health information systems. Excellent customer service skills. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Knowledge of the cleaning specifications of various laboratory and/or medical equipment, fixtures, utensils, and related materials.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

No unusual physical requirements. Requires no heavy lifting, and nearly all work is performed in a comfortable indoor facility. May involve minor safety hazards where likely result would be cuts, bruises, etc. Exposure to needles and body fluids. Routine deadlines; usually sufficient lead time; variance in work volume seasonal and predictable; priorities can be anticipated; some interruptions are present; involves occasional exposure to demands and pressures from persons other than immediate supervisor. Job frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, reaching, stooping/kneeling, crouching/crawling, talking, hearing, and handling objects with hands. Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically.
