SUMMARY: Assists the Director of Transportation in the area of dispatching bus drivers to ensure safe, timely transportation of District students to school and related school events. Assist in the development and maintenance of bus routes. Assists with emergencies and adjustments due to accidents, weather, breakdowns or school schedules. Assists parents, drivers and school administrators in the resolution of problem situations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES. Other duties may be assigned.

• Develops and monitors routes to improve efficiency.
• Works with principals, parents, and bus drivers regarding scheduling, route problems, complaints and student code of conduct as it relates to student behavior on buses.
• Maintains constant communication with bus drivers via two way radio.
• Assigns bus drivers and substitutes in absence of supervisor.
• Contact and assign substitute drivers for the operation to continue smoothly and promptly.
• Assists in routine office operations.
• Promotes safety practices for all transportation employees.
• Helps maintain records on buses and reports fleet accidents and property damage.
• Maintains accurate route records.
• Maintains equalization charts and records as required.
• Opens the transportation office in the morning and closes the office in the evening.
• Dispatch all vehicles on schedule.
• Assists in the development of routes and maps.
• Performs Bus Driver duties when coverage is not available.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
• Experience in general transportation operations.
• Must have a good driving record and be able to pass a physical, including a drug test and random drug testing throughout employment.
• Must possess a Commercial Driver's License with a School Bus Endorsement.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the District.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must possess a Commercial Driver's License. Must pass State Skill Test and State Written Test. Must meet all school bus driver certification and licensing requirements for the State of Michigan.

GENERAL

Must exhibit reliability, punctuality, dependability, honesty, and self-motivation.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Personal Computer and spreadsheet skills. Ability to apply knowledge. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents and the community. Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies. Ability to read and understand maps and directions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is continuously required to sit and talk or hear. The employee occasionally will walk and stand. The employee will frequently repeat the same hand arm motion many times. Occasionally, but essentially, the employee will drive a vehicle. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, color vision, and peripheral vision. Must be able to drive a bus.


Occasionally, yet essential to this position, the individual must meet deadlines with severe time constraints, interacting with the public and other workers. Occasionally the position requires the employee to work irregular or extended hours and meet multiple demands from several people.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. Work is performed indoors with the exception of driving.
