Job Duties Perform venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens according to CLSI guidelines. Demonstrate expertise in patient identification, specimen collection, labeling, accessioning, and processing. Exhibit strong problem‑solving skills and understand specimen acceptability criteria. Work under the leadership of Phlebotomist III, Preanalytical Specialist, Team Lead, Supervisor, or other laboratory leader and escalate issues accordingly. Operate independently and accountably in all assigned care areas. Use relevant Geisinger business applications and tools as an autonomous end user. Collect specimens in Acute, Post‑acute, Clinic, and Field Service areas as needed. Mentor students and new employees. Manage inventory as directed by site or regional lead. Complete initial and annual competency via LMS, including exam and direct observation checklist. Participate in continuous improvement initiatives, including root cause analyses. Position Details As a phlebotomist, support Geisinger’s mission of providing exceptional patient care. Collect samples via venipuncture/skin puncture in inpatient setting, troubleshoot physician orders, process specimens for testing, and aid patients. Phlebotomists work at levels I, II, and III; training for ASCP certification and departmental trainers is available. Qualifications High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED) – required. Minimum of 1 year related work experience – required. Phlebotomist I: less than 1 year experience. Phlebotomist II: 1–2 years experience or graduate of Geisinger School of Phlebotomy Program. Certified Phlebotomy Technician – American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) – required. Experience as nursing assistant (NA), certified nursing assistant (CNA), medical assistant (MA), certified medical assistant (CMA) or similar considered.
