General Laborer

Overview General Labors assist the concrete, sealcoating, and asphalt crews in completing projects on time and to company standards. The general laborer’s job description is to familiarize himself with all the job parameters, and to handle all the tools, equipment and material to take care of asphalt, sealcoating, and concrete projects. The general laborer has many responsibilities alongside the mill, alongside the tractor and screed of the asphalt paver, alongside the rollers, and in between these machines, making safety one of his top priorities. The general laborer’s responsibilities are to take care of the project. He will perform this duty by sweeping, brooming, raking, shoveling, lining out the job, sealcoating, crack sealing, tying rebar, setting up frames, and more. Throughout the shift, the laborers will maintain cleanliness around the project, shoveling up any spilled materials that could negatively affect the appearance of the job site. At the end of the shift, the general laborers become maintenance men. They will help with cleaning up equipment, ensuring it’s wiped down and free of materials that create problems later. The laborers will clean the tools and return them to the tool truck for safekeeping overnight. Don’t forget to remove all spray cans and paint cans from equipment so vandals don’t mark up your equipment at night. The laborers will also help with fueling the equipment at the end of the shift. The general laborers answer to the foreman on the job. Responsibilities Follow instructions given by foremen while performing a wide variety of manual tasks including lifting, carrying, leveling, spreading, and digging. Education/Experience High School Diploma/GED in progress or completed is preferred. Outdoor labor work experience in extreme heat and cold is required. Responsibilities and Duties Place, spread, smooth and level concrete and asphalt surfaces using hand tools. Positioning forms or molds. Site cleanup and preparation. Follow instruction offoremen and relay instructions to co-workers. Participation in ensuring that work meets contract specifications. Efficiently perform all miscellaneous tasks required. Proactively identify needs, problems, and opportunities. Ensure safety of crew, and the public. Maintain a positive attitude, reliable attendance, and meet company standards. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to see and correct defects in surfaces being installed. Ability to comprehend, retain and give instructions. Good communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills. Successful completion of pre-employment MVR, background and drug screen. Ability to work non-routine hours, when necessary. Technology Use: Google Maps Ability to lift/carry on a regular basis at least 50-90lbs personally. Ability to bend, crouch, stoop, and use hand tools. Maintain constant alertness to the multiple activities on the job site including equipment, co-workers, and other traffic. Constant physical effort including lifting, standing, shoveling, or walking for at least eight hours per day without fatiguing.
