Job Goals:

• To provide excellent maintenance/custodial and grounds keeping services so that facilities are clean, comfortable, and efficient educational and work environments.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. High school diploma or GED.
2. Valid Alabama driver's license and insurable driving record.
3. Ability to meet suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
4. Ability to work in locations involving heights or confined spaces; to work indoors and outdoors year-round in noisy, crowded environments, and inclement weather.
5. Demonstrated skills using standard tools, equipment, materials, methods, and practices of the custodial trade.
6. Demonstrated knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in cleaning furniture, floors, walls, windows, light fixtures, plumbing fixtures, and in making routine repairs.
7. Ability to carry out verbal and written instructions and demonstrate effective interpersonal skills.
8. Ability to read and follow plans, directions, and layouts for custodial projects.
9. Ability to prioritize tasks.
10. Ability to make estimates of time and material needed for efficient project completion.
11. Ability to climb and work from scaffolding, ladders, and heights.
12. Ability to engage in prolonged standing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning, and reaching.
13. Strength and agility to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
14. Ability to effectively perform simultaneous projects and initiatives while meeting multiple deadlines.
15. High level of personal initiative and ability to work without close supervision.
16. Ability and willingness to work after hours, weekends, shift work, or holidays if necessary.
17. Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
18. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require.

Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

1. Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals, and priorities.
2. Provides a clean work and learning environment at the school.
3. Performs campus-wide general maintenance and repairs including but not limited to carpentry repairs such as nailing down loose boards or replacing loose boards or worn/rotten floorboards, minor plumbing repairs, and replacement of defective electrical switches, fuses, etc.
4. Performs custodial work that ensures an efficient and effective balance between operation and preventative custodial services for the school.
5. Performs duties in a courteous and professional manner.
6. Scrubs, mops, waxes, and polishes floors according to established schedules and procedures.
7. Uses proper safety equipment as appropriate when performing maintenance/custodial duties.
8. Stores, uses, and disposes of chemicals, cleaners, and products in accordance with established procedures and instructions.
9. Delivers supplies to offices and classrooms.
10. Moves, sets up, re-arranges, or removes furniture as directed.
11. Replaces light bulbs where needed.
12. Monitors assigned facilities so that debris is picked up, restrooms are cleaned, floors are swept and mopped, garbage receptacles are emptied, fixtures and furnishings are dusted, and facilities are cleaned in accordance with established procedures and instructions.
13. Performs grounds keeping and landscape maintenance for assigned outdoor areas and school properties according to assigned schedule including but not limited to grass cutting (riding or push mowers); trimming and edging around trees, shrubs, ground cover, flowers, sidewalks, and buildings; weeding, thinning, and cleaning flower beds and other grounds.
14. Regularly inspects grounds, drains, etc., for debris; raking, sweeping, and bagging leaves, debris, dirt and trash from streets, sidewalks, parking lots, etc., and transporting the debris/trash to the designated area.
15. Assists in regular, routine inspection of buildings and grounds for safety hazards, repairs, or service and reports needs or solves issues according to established school system procedures.
16. Performs emergency custodial services (Clean-up of bodily fluids, chemical spills, glass breakage, etc.) in accordance with established procedures and training.
17. Prepares locations (indoor/outdoor) as needed by campus operations.
18. Safely operates light vehicles including but not limited to pick-up trucks, tractors, or riding mowers by obeying applicable traffic laws and following operating instructions and wearing appropriate safety items such as goggles, gloves, and protective clothing.
19. Safely operates portable power tools and equipment including but not limited to grass trimmers, leaf blowers, and sprayers by following operating instructions and wearing appropriate safety items such as goggles, gloves, and protective clothing.
20. Performs routine and preventive maintenance to verify grounds and building equipment are operational including but not limited to cleaning of tools, equipment, and machines within reasonable capabilities.
21. Maintains and reports inventory of materials and supplies as needed and makes recommendations of supplies and equipment for purchase; includes supplies for bathroom tissue, hand towels, cleaners, deodorizer, and other necessary materials and supplies.
22. Performs painting work in the preparation, patching, finishing, and maintaining of building structures, walls, woodwork, furniture, equipment, etc.
23. Follows written and verbal instructions and communicates effectively with others (custodial staff, vendors, school staff, students, parents, and community members).
24. Uses collaboration skills to work as a productive team member.
25. Engages in professional growth, ongoing training, and demonstrates professional ethics.
26. Engages in required orientations, trainings, and meetings as required for effective job performance.
27. Maintains confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters in accordance with state and federal law.
28. Demonstrates initiative in identifying opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.
29. Responds to inquiries and requests in a timely and positive manner.
30. Maintains and submits required reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
31. Properly cares for tools, equipment, and material resources of the school system.
32. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local laws.
33. Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
34. Performs any other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s).

Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.
