Undergraduate Student Research Assistant

This is a position for an undergraduate student research assistant. The student will be participating in research on the microbial community of marine invertebrates. This position is for 29 hours a week at $18 per hour. Students can receive course credit for this position through the Career Center.

Examples of Duties

Facility Support: The responsibilities of the Undergraduate Research Assistant include, but are not limited to the following:

1. Processing collected animals or settlement plates by photographing said animals or plates, preserving samples, keying out and identifying individual organisms, and preparing samples for DNA analysis.
2. Preparation of organismal and/or environmental DNA for sequencing, consisting of:

• DNA extraction
• PCR amplification of the DNA
• Gel electrophoresis
• DNA barcoding
• Normalization of DNA concentrations

• Entering and managing data
• Assistance with analysis and manuscript preparations for submission to peer-reviewed scientific journals

• Apply laboratory techniques (e.g., DNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis) with accuracy and consistency
• Analyze and interpret biological and environmental data
• Maintain organized and accurate research records and datasets
• Contribute to scientific writing and communicate findings for academic audiences

Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

• Must be a student at NCF, have taken Foundations I and II, and have an enthusiasm for lab research.
• Must have strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
• Punctual, reliable, and eager to contribute to efforts in the lab.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience doing gel electrophoresis, performing PCR, use of a micropipette, and familiarity with sterile technique.
• Experience using Microsoft Excel/Word, and Google Sheets/Docs.
