About Us The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Description of Work This position is located at Craven Correctional Institution in Vanceboro, NC, Craven County. The prison is a Medium Custody Adult Male Felon Diagnostic Processing Center which houses 850 offenders. Employees in this class carry a caseload of inmates, which involves supportive counseling, conducting assessments, developing case plans, answering and following up on inmate questions and problems, and making recommendations to the classification committee. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences Key Duties Include - In addition to regular case management duties, each case manager will also assist in major dynamic programs or coordinate major or specialized programs for the rehabilitation of offenders, such as offender work assignments, education, or recreation; substance abuse programs, community volunteers, offender library and special projects involving offender art show/writing contests, volunteer banquets, as well as transition planning and coordinating. - Employees in this class plan and coordinate transition (re-entry) prior to parole or release into the community. - Case managers may have mental health offenders on their caseload which requires additional time to manage. - Case managers are also often required to interact with community organizations in their performance of duties. Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission Salary Grade Range: $37,377.00 - $65,408.00 Candidates meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement.   • Thorough knowledge of policies and procedures of prisons.
  • Documented knowledge of techniques of supporting counseling and interviewing.
  • Documented knowledge of correctional programs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

About the Division of Institutions: The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety, security, and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff, program facilitators, and administrative personnel.
