HVAC Controls EngineerPosition Overview We are seeking an experienced HVAC Controls Engineer to design, program, commission, and support building automation and control systems for commercial and industrial HVAC applications. The role focuses on developing DDC and PLC control sequences, integrating BAS platforms, troubleshooting field controls, and ensuring systems operate efficiently and reliably to meet project objectives and client expectations.Key ResponsibilitiesDesign and develop control strategies and sequences for HVAC systems using DDC and PLC platforms.Program, configure, and commission building automation systems (BAS), including BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks, and proprietary protocols.Develop and configure controllers, I/O, ladder logic, function blocks, and control algorithms on programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and DDC controllers.Create and maintain graphical user interfaces, control schematics, point lists, and documentation for owner/operators and commissioning teams.Perform site start-up, testing, troubleshooting, and optimization of HVAC control systems; respond to field issues and implement corrective actions.Coordinate with mechanical, electrical, and commissioning teams to ensure control designs meet system performance, sequence requirements, and project timelines.Participate in design reviews, prepare engineering submittals, O&M manuals, and as-built documentation for controls systems.Provide remote and on-site support, training, and technical guidance to clients, operators, and junior engineers.Ensure compliance with codes, standards, and cybersecurity best practices for building automation and control systems.Evaluate new control technologies and tools to improve system performance, energy efficiency, and maintainability.QualificationsBachelors degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Controls Engineering, or related discipline, or equivalent work experience.3+ years of hands-on experience designing, programming, and commissioning HVAC control systems using DDC and PLC platforms.Proven experience with building automation systems (BAS) and HVAC control sequences, including integration of sensors, actuators, VFDs, and meters.Strong expertise with PLC programming and logic development for HVAC applications (ladder logic, function block, structured text or equivalent).Working knowledge of communication protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks, and TCP/IP networking for BAS integration.Experience with controls engineering deliverables: point lists, wiring diagrams, control narratives, and HMI/SCADA graphics.Familiarity with industry standards and practices for HVAC controls, energy management, and commissioning (ASHRAE, BMS cybersecurity guidelines, etc.).Excellent troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve field issues quickly and safely.Strong verbal and written communication skills; experience coordinating multidisciplinary project teams and client interactions.Professional certifications are a plus (e.g., Certified Control Systems Technician, BAS-specific certifications, or relevant PLC vendor certifications).
