Our client is a leading financial services organization focused on modernizing its data science and AI platforms. Based out of Charlotte, NC and the San Francisco Bay Area, they are looking to hire an

API Developer / Backend Integration Engineer

on a contract basis. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the next generation of AI-enabled business applications. Rather than building models, you'll be responsible for creating the scalable service layer that brings machine learning and AI capabilities into real-world products. The team is modernizing legacy platforms and moving toward GCP, Vertex AI, and BigQuery-aligned environments, providing engineers with exposure to cloud-native architectures and cutting-edge AI infrastructure. Ideal for someone who enjoys solving backend integration challenges, designing highly scalable services, and working closely with both onshore and global engineering teams.

Contract Duration: 12+ Months

Location: Charlotte, NC or San Francisco Bay Area (Hybrid – 3 days onsite)

Required Skills & Experience

• Strong backend engineering experience
• Proficiency in Golang and/or Python
• Experience building APIs, microservices, and service integrations
• Ability to design scalable backend systems
• Experience with RESTful services and distributed architectures
• Cloud experience with GCP or other cloud platforms
• Strong understanding of software engineering best practices
• Experience collaborating across geographically distributed teams
• Ability to integrate model outputs into enterprise applications

Desired Skills & Experience

• Experience with Vertex AI and BigQuery
• Exposure to model serving or inference gateways
• Microservices architecture experience
• Containerization technologies such as Docker or Kubernetes
• GenAI, LLM, or agent-based frameworks
• Familiarity with AI/ML infrastructure
• CI/CD and DevOps practices
• Experience with modern backend frameworks

• Golang and Python – 40%
• API Development & Service Integration – 30%

Daily Responsibilities

• Design and build backend services supporting AI and data science platforms
• Develop APIs and integration layers that expose model scores to business applications
• Build scalable service gateways and microservices
• Partner with data science teams to operationalize models
• Participate in modernization efforts from legacy environments to GCP
• Collaborate with onshore and offshore engineering teams
• Troubleshoot and optimize service performance
• Contribute to architecture discussions and technical design
• Ensure reliability, scalability, and maintainability of backend systems
