Summary This announcement is for a Medical Instrument Technologist (Gastroenterology). This position is located in the Gastrointestinal area of Endoscopy section within the Special Procedures Unit at the Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) at the Garner VA Clinic - Durham VA HCS. Qualifications United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy Education: There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation Licensure or Certification: No certification is required; however, BLS certification is desirable English Language Proficiency: Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English; no person will be appointed under authority of 38 U.S.C. chapter 73 or 74 to serve in a direct patient‑care capacity in VHA who is not proficient in written and spoken English Grade Determinations: Medical Instrument Technician (Gastroenterology) – GS‑6 Experience At least one year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, demonstrating knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled Experience should provide knowledge of proper performance of endoscopic equipment and procedures Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Knowledge of endoscopic equipment and use in basic and complex procedures Knowledge of anatomy and physiology related to the GI system with ability to recognize and report obvious abnormalities during procedures Ability to assist the physician with specialized complex procedures Knowledge of universal precautions and disinfection techniques; ability to follow SOPs to clean reusable medical equipment (RME) Ability to collaborate, communicate, and demonstrate customer service and interpersonal skills with all healthcare professionals to ensure quality and continuity of care Ability to use basic computer systems and programs to record patient and endoscopic data while adhering to patient privacy and information security policies Ability to deliver patient care, including vital sign measurements and medication administration Certification: No certification or registration is required; Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are desirable for employees at this level Preferred Experience: MIT GI endoscopy care experience such as ERCP and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) Proficient computer skills Sterile processing background Excellent communication and teamwork skills Knowledge of instruments, supplies, and equipment regarding GI procedures; SGNA Certificate; BLS Preferred Level of Education GS‑7 with GS‑6 completed qualifications; Preferred Certifications: BLS Assignment Technicians at this level function with minimal instruction – assisting staff with complex specialized procedures such as ERCP and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) They are proficient with GI endoscopic equipment and ensure proper performance of equipment They select alternate equipment or adjust equipment settings to accommodate patient needs and produce high quality technique They collect, process, and label all specimens They train other technicians in basic endoscopic procedures They work in and outside the GI unit, offering technician support during emergent and on‑call endoscopic cases They assist the nurse in patient care duties such as obtaining vital signs, dressing, and documenting all pertinent information in the patient’s records They inventory and maintain par levels of specialty equipment for the endoscopy unit Physical requirements: The MIT (Gastroenterology) must meet visual acuity, keen hearing, clear speech, manual dexterity; must be able to walk, stand, stoop, sit, bend, pull, and push for extended periods; may need to transfer patients and objects; may be exposed to infected patients, contaminated materials, or radiation, requiring protective gear; may encounter combative patients; must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations and shifting priorities based on patient needs; must complete annual employee health requirements such as annual TB screening or testing as a condition of employment. Duties Perform and assist in diagnostic examinations Coordinate MIT GS‑related procedures and operation and maintenance of biomedical equipment, including video endoscopes, laser, and other specialty equipment Serve as liaison to hospital biomedical equipment repair section and outside repair vendors in the absence of the Lead Technician Ensure proper performance of endoscopic equipment and keep current on all area SOPs Collaborate, communicate, and demonstrate customer service and interpersonal skills with all healthcare professionals to ensure quality and continuity of care Inventory and maintain par levels of specialty equipment for the endoscopy unit Prepare procedural rooms for endoscopic procedures Assist the Endoscopist and Nurse during procedures by preparing the procedure rooms, calling patients, directing them to dressing rooms, and assisting patients with undressing and gowning when needed Assist during the procedure by obtaining diagnostic specimens using appropriate equipment and specimen containers Prepare diagnostic biopsy specimens, assess adequacy, orient specimens properly, and label properly for laboratory processing Work schedule: Monday‑Friday, 8‑hour tours (Variable 7:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.).
