Battery Launch Engineer, Energy Products
Full-time
Tesla
What To Expect
Tesla is seeking a Battery Launch Engineer to own holistic product improvement for Megapack and other energy storage products, from factory ramp through production sustaining and field quality. This role is embedded on the factory floor and serves as the design team's primary liaison to manufacturing, process, and quality teams. You'll debug issues on the production line, investigate field failures, and find the right solution, whether that's a design change, a process update, or a manufacturing improvement. This requires strong mechanical design fundamentals, manufacturing awareness, and the judgment to know which lever to pull. What You'll Do Serve as the design team's on the ground representative in the factory, working daily alongside manufacturing, process, and quality teams to translate design intent into production reality Support the product ramp from initial builds to mature builds, ensuring designs are optimized for manufacturability (DFM) and assembly (DFA) Work with suppliers to ensure components meet design intent and quality standards, driving corrective action when they don't Debug production issues in real time, identifying whether root cause is design, process, or manufacturing driven. Determine the right solution and own the implementation through the appropriate channel Own sustaining mechanical design changes driven by production feedback, resolving build issues, improving yields, and driving cost and performance improvements back into the design Review parts, assemblies, and production output with a critical eye, identifying fit, finish, tolerance, and workmanship issues before they become systemic problems Conduct root cause analysis on field quality issues, then drive corrective actions through design mitigations, process updates, or specification clarifications Develop and execute design validation plans and test methods to confirm components and subsystems meet requirements, including validation of corrective actions and design mitigations driven by RCA, in collaboration with design and cross-functional teams Create and maintain engineering documentation including design change records, process workflows, SOPs, and launch readiness checklists Travel as needed to support supplier quality, sister factories, or launch / sustaining activities at other Tesla facilities What You'll Bring Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience, with 3+ years of mechanical design experience. You have personally designed, detailed, and released parts or assemblies into high-volume production Strong engineering fundamentals in material science, heat transfer, mechanics, and fluids, with working knowledge of materials used in mechanical design (metals, plastics, insulators, connectors, gaskets, etc.) and their fabrication processes (injection molding, machining, welding, brazing, sheet metal, extrusions, casting, forging, bonding, etc.) Proficiency in CAD (SolidWorks, CATIA, NX, or similar) with strong working knowledge of tolerances and a demonstrated ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and specifications with a sharp eye for what doesn't look right Familiarity with design for reliability/FMEA concepts, PLM/engineering change systems, and PCBA/electrical systems Comfortable using data to drive decisions. Proficiency in Excel and familiarity with tools such as MATLAB, Python, Minitab, JMP, or similar for data analysis, trend identification, and statistical methods (SPC, 8D, etc.) Comfortable working on a production floor daily — this role is factory-embedded, not desk-embedded Excellent problem solving instincts and the practical judgment to distinguish between a cosmetic concern and a functional risk Strong communication skills. You'll be the translator between design engineers and factory teams, so clarity matters Experience with launch, NPI, or manufacturing/quality/process engineering in a high-volume production environment is a plus Experience with energy storage systems, high-voltage battery products, or battery cell manufacturing and fundamentals (swelling, DCR, PPR, etc.) is a plus Benefits
Compensation and Benefits
Along with competitive pay, as a full-time Tesla employee, you are eligible for the following benefits at day 1 of hire:
