Registered Nurse Lactation Consultant

Job Summary The Lactation Consultant is a Registered Nurse who champions and serves as an expert consultant for the facility’s Breastfeeding Program. The primary focus of this role is facilitating the initiation and continuation of breastfeeding by providing education and assistance to patients. Additionally, the RN Specialist will train and collaborate with the maternal nursing staff to deliver consistent and accurate information to new mothers. Responsibilities Collaborate with all other healthcare disciplines to execute the patient’s plan-of-care. Serve as a Labor and Delivery nurse when the lactation census is low and assist with department staffing needs. Consider developmental goals for patients across all age groups during assessments. Provide outpatient education and support for expectant and new parents. Conduct classes that impart information on breastfeeding according to the stated objectives and content for each topic. Orient new employees of Women’s Services to the Lactation Department, as appropriate. Education and Experience Associate’s Degree in Nursing—required. Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing—preferred. 1+ year of nursing experience in Labor and Delivery—required. 2 years’ experience as a lactation educator in an inpatient setting—preferred. Licenses and Certifications Current Texas RN License or a Compact RN license from an NCLA Compact State—required. New hires have 90 days from start date to obtain a Texas RN license. Current BLS certification—required. NRP—required as per St. David’s HealthCare policy. ACLS/ALS—required as per St. David’s HealthCare policy. IBCLC (Internationally Board-Certified Lactation Consultant) within 1 year of hire date—required.
