Equipment Operator II (2 Positions)An Equipment Operator II operates one or more types of heavy equipment and performs a variety of skilled tasks in support of solid waste and resource recovery operations. This role requires strong technical ability, sound judgment, and a consistent focus on safety, efficiency, and accountability. Employees in this class exercise considerable skill in operating equipment while maintaining constant awareness of surroundings to prevent accidents, protect personnel, and avoid equipment damage. Work involves completing assigned tasks with accuracy, efficiency, and adherence to operational and safety standards.Assignments are typically outlined by supervisors; however, employees are expected to demonstrate initiative, adaptability, and ownership of assigned responsibilities. Work is inspected periodically for safety, quality, and efficiency. This class differs from Equipment Operator I by requiring a higher degree of skill, the ability to perform more complex tasks, and a greater level of accountability due to the potential impact of errors on operations, safety, and equipment.The OpportunityOperates rear-load refuse collection trucks in residential or public space routes, including coordinating safe and efficient collection activities with a two-person crew.Leads and works alongside assigned crew members to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established procedures, including reinforcing proper collection methods and safety practices;Ensures that safety rules, including proper PPE, backing procedures, and situational awareness practices, are consistently followed;Completes assigned tasks such as refuse collection, material transport, and site support activities with accuracy, efficiency, and minimal disruption to operations;Operates knuckle-boom loader typically used for loading heavy materials such as large metal items or bulk yard debris.Performs daily equipment inspections, identifies deficiencies, and reports malfunctions or safety concerns promptly; assists with minor repairs and equipment care;Maintains required documentation, including daily reports and work activity records, with accuracy and transparency;Operates equipment safely under varying conditions, including weather, traffic, and route or site constraints;Occasionally operates equipment in support of snow and ice control operations, including sanding, salting, and plowing activities;Responds to citizen inquiries and complaints in a professional and respectful manner, representing the City positively;Assists in special projects, community events, and other operational needs as required;Supports the training and guidance of less experienced employees to ensure safe and effective work practices;Performs other duties as required, including operating additional equipment as assigned.Demonstrated ability to:Operate equipment safely, efficiently, and with a high level of technical proficiencyComplete assigned tasks accurately and on schedule while maintaining safety standardsPerform equipment inspections and identify, report, and address maintenance or safety concerns proactivelyAdapt to changing work conditions, priorities, and operational demandsCommunicate effectively and work collaboratively with team members, supervisors, and the publicDemonstrate professionalism through reliability, punctuality, and adherence to safety and workplace standardsProvide guidance and support to less experienced employeesTake ownership of work, including accountability for equipment, task completion, and safety outcomesDemonstrate integrity through honest reporting, compliance with procedures, and responsible decision-makingShow initiative in improving efficiency, safety, and overall team performance.About the DepartmentT&ES is a community partner in shaping a livable, green, and prospering Alexandria. If you are curious for a broader view of our City, click City of Alexandria to learn more.Minimum & Additional RequirementsThe Ideal CandidateTo qualify for this position all candidates must possess a High School Diploma or GED or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities; at least two years of experience driving related equipment in the field of Solid Waste; ability to demonstrate supervisory skills; must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) issued by the state of residence with all applicable endorsements; thorough knowledge of traffic safety rules and regulations; must be able to read and comprehend technical materials and evaluate work orders; must have the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment, and the physical ability to perform job tasks under all types of weather conditions.NotesResource Recovery is a 7 day/week work group. Your scheduled hours may require working on Saturday, Sunday and or both.
