South Newton School Corporation Position Description Position Title: Substitute School Nurse Department: Nurse/Health Department Reports To: Principals, Primarily Elementary Summary: To provide nursing services that focus on assessments, health counseling, education, referrals, and consultations. The school nurse should: Provide nursing care that incorporates health promotion and disease prevention Work with groups, families, and individuals at increased risk of illness, disability, or premature death Function in multidisciplinary teams and programs Refer to other agencies to ensure comprehensive health and welfare services Work with community leaders, health groups, and social programs to promote health and prevent disease Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Develop, implement, and evaluate school health programs in cooperation with staff and community resources Identify and report environmental health and safety hazards Maintain student health records and review them annually Keep statistical data on health status and service utilization Supervise health aides/paraprofessionals Assess health and developmental status of students Apply decision-making theories based on health assessments Train and educate paraprofessionals on medical treatments and procedures Identify health problems through assessments and screenings Implement mandated screening programs Communicate health concerns to parents and staff Develop Individualized Health Plans (IHPs) Participate in child study teams and develop health components of IEPs Maintain emergency care systems and administer medication per orders Provide health counseling and guide students and families to community resources Support students' health needs and develop self-care skills Assist teachers with health education and conduct staff training Collaborate with community agencies and health professionals Utilize current research and participate in health research activities Maintain professional development Qualifications: Must have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, be a licensed registered nurse in Indiana, certified as a school nurse, and CPR certified. Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervises health aides in assigned buildings. Physical Demands: Includes sitting, walking, standing, reaching, lifting up to 90 pounds, and vision requirements. Work Environment: Moderate noise, exposure to infection risk, and responsibility for student safety.
