Job Description and Duties

FORESTRY AIDE – ORANGE COAST DISTRICT / NORTH SECTOR / CRYSTAL COVE STATE PARK

“Priority consideration will be given to any person receiving State public assistance under the CalWORKs program. The reporting location for this position is Crystal Cove State Park in Laguna Beach , CA . This position will work under the supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist Supervisor.

California State Parks is seeking qualified individuals to work on the Natural Resource Management team in coastal Orange County, California. The Natural Resource Management team is charged with protecting and restoring the natural resources of six of Orange County’s coastal State Parks. This position is primarily field based with some office work.

This position may work up to 1500 hours within 12 consecutive months. This position is designated as not telework eligible. Some weekend work may be required. Employee must be able to work a minimum of three, 8-hour days per week initially. Some flexibility in work schedule may be accommodated.  The start date for this position is ASAP.

The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment.

This position requires a valid Class C driver’s license. You must answer the questions addressing your driver’s license on your application. Ensure you provide your driver’s license number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions on your application.

State housing is not available. Working Conditions

Working outdoors, often in remote locations, in various types of weather. Work in potentially hazardous situations, (e.g. around wildfire, chemicals, heavy equipment). Work in office environment.

Special Requirements

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Experience with California native plant identification & natural history.
Education and/or training in ecology, biology, environmental science, etc. A college degree in the natural sciences is preferred, but not required.
Physically able to work in rugged terrain, for multiple days in a row, and often carrying heavy loads under inclement weather conditions.
Knowledge and experience using mechanical equipment (weed trimmers, chain saws, etc.).
Proficient using Microsoft software (Excel, Teams, Outlook). Experience using ArcGIS software for mapping is a plus.
Ability to make day-to-day decisions based on project and program needs
Good communication and writing skills.
Strong attention to detail and well organized.
Ability to work independently and as a team member to complete tasks effectively and efficiently.
Professional, polite, and a positive attitude while working with others and interacting with the public.
