POLICE OFFICER

ANNUAL SALARY: $66,040

INTERMEDIATE PROTECTIVE SERVICE WORK Perform protective service work including general or support duty police assignments under regular supervision with emergency situations.

INCENTIVES / BONUS

Sign‑On Bonus: $3,000 to $10,000 depending on experience. Additional Incentives: Police Pension with DROP (for qualified officers) Educational Incentive (for qualified officers) up to $130.00/month Tuition Assistance Program – up to $3,000 per fiscal year. Shift Differential (night shift), K‑9 Incentive, FTO Incentive (for qualified officers) Longevity (for qualified officers) Newly‑hired out‑of‑state officers receive a $5,000 State of Florida Recruitment Bonus. Police Officers work 2,184 hours per year.

EMERGENCY STATUS

Must report to work for duty outside normally scheduled work hours in response to natural disasters, emergencies, or critical incidents as determined by City Administration. The OPD will hire at either the Police Officer Level or the Police Officer Trainee Level.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Patrol the city; respond to service requests; enforce laws and ordinances; make arrests; prepare and serve warrants; issue citations for traffic laws; testify in court; prepare records and files. On an assigned shift, operate a patrol vehicle or walk to observe violations of traffic laws, suspicious activities or persons, and disturbances of law and order; enforce drug laws; conduct follow‑up investigations; develop intelligence sources. Ensure police vehicle is properly operated and maintained. Respond to radio dispatches and answer calls and complaints; conduct surveillance and stakeouts. Investigate traffic accidents; make checks on senior citizens; conduct neighborhood watch meetings. Secure crime scenes, collect and package evidence; may act as a School Resource Officer; may be assigned to the Community Response Team. Provide police escorts; direct traffic; perform residential and commercial checks. Follow safe work practices and procedures, and report unsafe conditions existing in streets or other public facilities. Prepare detailed reports on activities and assignments. May be assigned to investigations, crime prevention, special duty, special operations, etc. Perform related tasks as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

High School diploma or GED and at least 21 years of age. Valid Florida driver license. Must be certified or able to present proof of current enrollment in (to be followed by satisfactory completion of) State of Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Basic Law Enforcement Academy. Must meet and maintain all minimum state and local training and educational requirements. Candidates must not have applied within the past year for a Police Officer position at the City of Oviedo.
