Deckhand

Overview The Deckhand is responsible for the safe, efficient, reliable, and environmentally compliant operation of assigned area on a harbor tug boat. The primary function is to build and break tows during the process of transporting aggregate barges. The position may work up to a twelve hour shifts on the harbor boat. The position does not require overnight stays on the vessel but working on multiple vessels may be required. Education, Experience, and Skills Required High School Diploma/GED or an equivalent combination of training and work experience. Candidate with valid Merchant Marine Document (Z-Card) preferred. Valid Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) preferred. Valid Driver’s License. Experience Minimum of 6 months of proven proficiency aboard inner harbor and/or inland waterway tugs. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Comprehend essential information related to Spill containment and cleanup. Comprehend essential information related to MSDS sheets and emergency action information. Comprehend essential information related to Safety meetings. Ensure safe, working conditions and orderliness of the vessel. Follow all company safety rules and environmental regulations. Wear safety equipment as required. Communication: Must be able to read, write and communicate using the radio, speaker or electronic communication in English. Posture/Flexibility: Be able to tolerate repetitive and prolonged postures involving standing, sitting, twisting, squatting, kneeling, stooping, and reaching to full range from above the head to the deck. Flexibility: Must be able to extend both arms fully, throughout a normal range of motion both in a horizontal and vertical plane. Dexterity: frequently use one and two hands throughout the work period for grasping and fingering to perform such activities as using various types of hand tools, tying lines, and tightening nuts and bolts often while applying high forces. Balance/Coordination: Must be able to safely walk over catwalks, enter/exit hatches, and over uneven and/or slippery surfaces. Must be able to climb ladders, stairwells and push knees. Essential Functions Assist others on the vessel in preparing barges for the loading and discharging of cargoes. Build tows by using cables and lines to tie and untie barges and boats. Handle lines and rigging during tow building, locking and docking activities. Perform scheduled preventative vessel maintenance including cleaning, scraping, painting, and changing all oil and filters. Inspect, correct if possible, and notify the Captain of any conditions that affect the safety of the boat. Perform all duties while wearing protective equipment to include foul weather gear, life jacket, gloves and boots. Adhere to and comply with company policies, United States Coast Guard, and environmental regulations. Perform simple repairs and maintain tools and equipment. Measure draft of barge using a tape measure to ensure proper loading. Be familiar with engine room piping, wiring and valves. Work required overtime and flexible work schedule. Speak, read, and have a working knowledge of the English language. Work outdoors and be exposed to varying and/or extreme weather conditions (heat, wet, cold, etc). May work in high and/or precarious places or cramped work space that requires getting into awkward positions. Stand, walk, or sit for extended periods; grip, climb, reach, shovel, squat, crawl, pull, push, bend and lift up to 45 pounds. Vulcan Materials Company is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
