Job Summary To provide the fullest possible educational opportunity for each student by minimizing absence due to illness and creating a climate of health and well-being in
all District school sites. Job Description / Essential Elements: Essential Job Functions
Participate in the identification, removal or modification of health related barriers to learning in individual children; strive for the prevention of illness and disability as well as early detection and correction of health problems; provide mandated screening services for vision, color vision, and hearing and participate in kindergarten screenings; complete statistical data required by State of California and maintain appropriate consents, physician orders, and protocols; review, record, and assess for compliance immunizations and CHDP; provide, teach, supervise special procedures required by students with special health needs (gastrostomy tubes, anaphylaxis, diabetic reactions); identify communicable diseases, refer to medical provider, distribute information to school population, and report them to the Public Health Department; participate in developmental and current health assessments, IEP process for identified students, and triennial reassessments; maintain health records of all students and maintain lists of all students with major health conditions, providing updates to faculty; monitor all medications administered at school and temporary telephone (verbal) orders from physician as appropriate; provide first aid, emergency care when on site; establish and maintain first aid policies and procedures; inservice health staff in current first aid procedures; respond to classroom teachers concerns regarding students health with assessment and referral; make home visitations as appropriate; identify and refer students who are victims of abuse and/or neglect; coordinate school site health offices and supervise health office personnel; provide individual health counseling to students and staff; provide crisis counseling to students, families and staff; identify and refer students and their families to community resources; act as liaison between student, family, physician, and teacher for major health problems; participate in the development and delivery of curriculum for all health education classes and in the development of the school disaster plan; provide health related inservice programs for school staff (AIDS, Hepatitis B, first aid, child abuse safety); assume responsibility for professional growth through continuing education; furnish own reliable transportation in order to travel to other sites as assigned; maintain confidentiality and a positive attitude at all times; perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications
California Public School Nursing Credential; California Registered Nurse License
California Driver's License
Previous service as a school nurse desirable
Public Health Certificate desirable Physical Abilities
Strength and energy sufficient to maintain a rigorous work schedule requiring continuous physical activity including the repetitive lifting of heavy children in and out of restricted spaces
Hearing and speaking to exchange information
Seeing in order to monitor and supervise students
Use of hands and fingers to utilize technological equipment
Bending at the waist, kneeling, crouching, or reaching to assist students and to retrieve & store materials
Walking and standing for extended periods of time to provide instruction
Sitting in order to work at desks or tables Hazards
Exposure to climatic elements and intermittent noise; constant interruptions
