Job Summary Operate one or several types of power construction equipment (e.g., RT backhoe, loader, trencher, track hoe, RT forklift, mini excavator). Perform tasks to excavate, move, and/or grade material. Key Responsibilities Operate gasoline, diesel, pneumatic, or electric powered equipment to move objects or material according to project specifications. Assemble and operate compressors and pumps; use levers and pedals to lower buckets, scoop material, lift, swing, or dump materials; adjust hand wheels and foot pedals to drive machines and control attachments such as blades, buckets, scrapers, and swing booms. Perform light maintenance duties such as cleaning, greasing, and oiling machines. Document maintenance logs and daily inspections. Coordinate machine actions with other crew activities, positioning loads, and responding to hand or audio signals. Load, move, and grade dirt, rocks, equipment, or other materials using trucks, crawler tractors, shovels, graders, or related equipment. Check fuel supplies and ensure adequate availability. Drive and maneuver equipment equipped with blades in successive passes to remove topsoil, vegetation, or rocks, or to distribute and level earth. Calculate slopes and grades of materials and follow trenching and excavating requirements and regulations. Avoid potential hazards such as utility lines, other equipment, workers, or falling objects; locate underground services before work begins; follow Red Tag procedures. Maintain equipment safety: follow load capacity charts, observe load travel, and prevent injury or property damage. Participate in all safety‑related processes, pre‑job work planning, and safety discussions. Identify hazards, take corrective action, and use stop‑work authority when needed. Communicate effectively with supervisors and safety professionals. Provide on‑the‑job training and mentoring to helpers and laborers. Ensure quality work that meets plans, specifications, and industry standards. Read and apply operating manuals and visualise drawings. Accurately fill out equipment and maintenance records on a regular basis. Inspect subordinates’ work for compliance and correct deficiencies. Notify supervision of hazards and utilise stop‑work authority when needed. Ensure operating, maintenance, and daily inspections of construction equipment are performed. Preferred Qualifications NCCER Heavy Equipment Operations NCCER Highway / Heavy Construction NCCER Rigger NCCER Site Layout Minimum Qualifications Multiple years of experience as an equipment operator or a combination of experience and education. Requires strong knowledge of operating and rigging crafts, equipment limitations, and safe work practices. Must possess a Medical Examiner’s Certificate before operation. Commercial driver’s licence required when operating on public roads. Must be at least 18 years of age. Must complete pre‑employment onboarding requirements, including background check, drug screening, and motor vehicle records search. Stand, kneel, bend, stoop, and move in confined, cluttered, or uneven areas. Full range of motion and flexibility required. Use hands to handle and control tools, equipment, or controls. Repetitive movement common. Climb and maintain balance on steel framework, stairs, ladders, and scaffolds. Work up to a 12‑hour shift in varying temperature extremes and outdoor conditions. Typical construction site environment. Work in cramped spaces and awkward positions. Exposure to hot (above 90 °F) or cold (below 32 °F) temperatures and inclement weather such as dust, wind, snow, rain. Exposure to bright or inadequate lighting. Exposure to distracting or uncomfortable noise levels. Work around hazardous equipment. This position is safety sensitive.
