Instrumentation & Calibration Technician – Laboratory
Pay: $31.00–$35.00 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications
Full-Time | Monday–Friday | Primarily Shop-Based | No Routine Travel
Calibrations & Controls is a growing calibration and instrumentation service company serving municipal, industrial, manufacturing, and process-control customers throughout Minnesota and the Midwest.
We are looking for an experienced Instrumentation & Calibration Technician to join our team in a primarily shop-based role.
Unlike our field service positions, this technician will spend the majority of their time working in our calibration laboratory performing calibration, testing, troubleshooting, and repair of customer instrumentation. This position does not involve routine customer-site travel or overnight travel .
We are looking for someone with a strong technical background who is comfortable working with industrial instrumentation, test equipment, electrical signals, sensors, and calibration procedures.
Responsibilities
- Perform calibration and verification of industrial instrumentation using established procedures and traceable reference standards.
- Perform as-found and as-left testing and make adjustments when appropriate.
- Calibrate, test, troubleshoot, and service equipment including:
- Gas detectors and gas monitoring equipment
- Pressure gauges, pressure transmitters, and switches
- Temperature instruments and sensors
- pH and conductivity meters
- Dissolved oxygen instrumentation
- Flow meters and flow instrumentation
- Electrical and 4–20 mA instrumentation
- Process transmitters and related industrial instrumentation
- Use calibration standards, process calibrators, multimeters, pressure standards, temperature equipment, gas calibration equipment, and other test equipment.
- Diagnose instrument failures and determine whether equipment requires adjustment, repair, sensor replacement, or additional service.
- Perform basic repairs and replacement of sensors, batteries, fittings, components, and other serviceable parts.
- Review and interpret manufacturer manuals, specifications, wiring diagrams, calibration procedures, and technical documentation.
- Accurately document calibration results, including as-found and as-left readings.
- Complete calibration records, technician notes, and other required documentation.
- Inspect incoming customer equipment for damage, missing components, contamination, or other issues.
- Communicate equipment failures, repair recommendations, and unusual findings to supervisors.
- Maintain calibration standards and laboratory equipment in an organized and professional manner.
- Maintain a clean and organized calibration workspace.
- Follow company quality procedures and safety requirements.
- Assist with developing and improving calibration procedures as experience with equipment and processes grows.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Minimum of approximately 3 years of professional experience in calibration, instrumentation, electronics, industrial maintenance, process controls, or a closely related technical field.
- Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude.
- Experience using electrical or electronic test equipment.
- Ability to read and follow technical procedures and manufacturer documentation.
- Ability to read wiring diagrams, specifications, and technical manuals.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate work.
- Basic understanding of electrical measurements and signals.
- Comfortable working with computers and electronic documentation.
- Ability to work independently after completing company-specific training.
- Dependable and able to maintain consistent attendance.
Preferred Qualifications
Direct experience in one or more of the following areas is highly desirable:
- Instrument calibration
- Industrial instrumentation
- 4–20 mA loops and process signals
- Pressure calibration
- Temperature calibration
- Flow instrumentation
- Gas detection equipment
- Analytical instrumentation
- pH, conductivity, or dissolved oxygen instrumentation
- Electrical troubleshooting
- Process controls
- Water and wastewater instrumentation
- Manufacturing or industrial maintenance
- Metrology or calibration laboratory work
Additional preferred experience includes:
- Performing as-found and as-left calibrations.
- Working with NIST-traceable calibration standards.
- Troubleshooting failed instrumentation.
- Performing sensor or component replacement.
- Working with multiple manufacturers and instrument types.
- Technical school, trade school, electronics training, instrumentation training, military technical experience, or equivalent hands-on industrial experience.

We do not expect applicants to already have experience with every type of instrument we service. Training will be provided on company procedures, equipment, and unfamiliar instrumentation.
Physical Requirements
This position is primarily performed indoors in our calibration shop.
The employee must be able to:
- Sit, stand, and work at a calibration bench for extended periods.
- Frequently use hand tools, calibration equipment, computers, and small instrumentation components.
- Bend, reach, stoop, and move throughout the shop as needed.
- Safely lift and carry instruments and equipment weighing approximately 20–50 lbs.
- Visually inspect displays, gauges, wiring, sensors, fittings, and small components.
Schedule
- Full-time position
- Monday through Friday
- Normal daytime business hours
- Primarily indoor laboratory/shop environment
- No routine overnight travel
- No regular customer-site travel
Compensation & Benefits
Starting pay: $31.00–$35.00 per hour , depending on experience, technical background, and calibration knowledge.
