Position Summary
The OB/GYN Sonographer performs high-quality obstetrical and gynecologic ultrasound examinations in accordance with physician orders, departmental protocols, professional practice standards, and organizational policies. This position is responsible for obtaining accurate diagnostic images and measurements, maintaining complete examination documentation, providing compassionate patient-centered care, and supporting physicians during ultrasound-guided procedures.
The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in obstetric and gynecologic anatomy, fetal development, ultrasound physics, patient positioning, image optimization, and transabdominal and transvaginal scanning techniques.
Essential Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive obstetrical and gynecologic ultrasound examinations in accordance with established protocols, physician orders, and practice standards.
- Perform Level I and Level II obstetrical ultrasounds, including detailed fetal anatomical surveys and assessments as directed by the supervising physician.
- Perform nuchal translucency studies, fetal echocardiography, Doppler studies, biophysical profiles, and other specialized obstetric imaging examinations within demonstrated competency and practice policy.
- Perform gynecologic transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasound examinations, including infertility-related imaging and pelvic studies.
- Perform sonohysterograms and assist physicians during amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, and other ultrasound-guided procedures, as assigned and within scope.
- Review patient history, clinical indications, prior imaging, and provider orders before beginning each examination.
- Position, prepare, and educate patients for ultrasound examinations while protecting patient dignity, comfort, privacy, and safety.
- Explain procedures in clear, understandable language and respond to patient questions within scope to help reduce anxiety.
- Apply knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology, fetal development, positioning, ultrasound physics, and imaging techniques to obtain high-quality diagnostic studies.
- Accurately obtain, label, measure, document, and transmit images and examination data to the appropriate imaging archive, PACS, electronic health record, and/or reporting platform.
- Maintain complete and timely records of all studies, including examination details, patient care provided, required measurements, and procedural documentation.
- Recognize urgent or unexpected findings and promptly notify the interpreting physician or appropriate clinical provider according to established escalation protocols.
- Prepare ultrasound equipment, supplies, examination rooms, and procedure trays; perform routine equipment quality checks and report malfunctioning equipment promptly.
- Maintain infection-control precautions, clean and disinfect probes and equipment according to manufacturer instructions and facility policy, and identify potential infection-control concerns.
- Participate in quality assurance, peer review, quality improvement, annual competency validation, HIPAA, compliance, and mandatory in-service training.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information and comply with HIPAA, patient-rights requirements, and applicable organizational, New York State, and federal regulations.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by management.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Graduation from an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Ultrasound Technology, or related medical imaging program; degree or certificate of completion required.
- Eligible for ARDMS certification at the time of hire.
- Ability to obtain and maintain ARDMS certification within two years of hire, consistent with organizational policy. To earn the RDMS credential with the OB/GYN specialty, the sonographer must pass both the Sonography Principles & Instrumentation (SPI) examination and the ARDMS OB/GYN specialty examination within five years of one another.onetonline+1
- Minimum of two years of full-time experience in radiographic procedures, diagnostic imaging, sonography, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and clinical experience, as determined by the employer.
- Demonstrated knowledge of obstetric and gynecologic anatomy, fetal development, ultrasound physics, patient positioning, and diagnostic imaging techniques.
- Strong patient-care, communication, interpersonal, organizational, and time-management skills.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize a daily schedule, maintain attention to detail, and effectively manage a busy patient volume.
- Proficiency with electronic health records, imaging software, PACS, digital documentation, and standard office technology.
- Ability to communicate effectively and compassionately with patients, families, physicians, and staff.
