The Musculoskeletal (MSK) Radiologist is responsible for providing high-quality diagnostic imaging interpretation and consultation focused on diseases and injuries involving bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and soft tissues. The physician collaborates closely with orthopedic surgery, sports medicine, rheumatology, oncology, emergency medicine, primary care, and rehabilitation services to deliver comprehensive, patient-centered care.The MSK Radiologist performs and interprets advanced musculoskeletal imaging studies, participates in multidisciplinary conferences, contributes to quality improvement initiatives, and supports educational and research activities as appropriate.Essential ResponsibilitiesClinical ResponsibilitiesInterpret musculoskeletal imaging examinations, including:Digital Radiography (X-ray)Computed Tomography (CT)Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)UltrasoundInterpret general diagnostic radiology examinations as required by departmental needs.Provide timely, accurate, and clinically relevant reports.Communicate urgent or unexpected findings directly to referring providers.Participate in multidisciplinary orthopedic, oncology, sports medicine, and trauma conferences.Provide imaging consultation to referring physicians.Participate in peer review and quality assurance activities.Procedural ResponsibilitiesMay perform image-guided procedures including:Joint aspirationsJoint injectionsSoft tissue aspirationsTendon sheath injectionsBursal injectionsUltrasound-guided proceduresCT-guided musculoskeletal biopsiesBone biopsiesRadiofrequency ablation and other minimally invasive MSK procedures (where applicable)CollaborationCollaborate with:Orthopedic SurgerySports MedicineRheumatologyPhysical Medicine & RehabilitationEmergency MedicineOncologyPrimary CarePain ManagementPhysical TherapyServe as an imaging consultant to assist with appropriate imaging utilization and clinical decision-making.Quality & SafetyMaintain compliance with:ACR GuidelinesJoint Commission standardsCMS requirementsState and federal regulationsParticipate in departmental quality improvement initiatives.Support radiation dose optimization and MRI safety programs.Participate in peer learning and discrepancy review programs.EducationEducate residents, fellows, medical students, and allied health professionals (where applicable).Participate in continuing medical education activities.Present educational conferences and case reviews.Support physician and technologist education regarding musculoskeletal imaging protocols.Research (Optional)Depending on organizational expectations:Participate in clinical research.Publish scholarly work.Present at regional or national meetings.Support clinical trials involving musculoskeletal imaging.QualificationsRequiredDoctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO)Completion of an accredited Diagnostic Radiology ResidencyCompletion of an accredited Musculoskeletal Imaging FellowshipBoard Certified or Board Eligible in Diagnostic RadiologyEligible for unrestricted medical licensureEligible for hospital medical staff privilegesDEA registration (if procedural practice requires)PreferredCAQ or advanced expertise in Musculoskeletal ImagingExperience with advanced MRI techniquesExperience performing image-guided musculoskeletal proceduresAcademic teaching experienceResearch experienceExperience with AI-enabled imaging workflow toolsKnowledge, Skills & AbilitiesExpertise in musculoskeletal anatomy and pathologyAdvanced proficiency in MRI, CT, ultrasound, and radiography interpretationExcellent communication skillsStrong collaboration with multidisciplinary clinical teamsCommitment to patient-centered careAbility to work efficiently in a high-volume environmentStrong attention to detailCommitment to continuous quality improvementWork EnvironmentHospital-based imaging departmentsOutpatient imaging centersAcademic medical centersRemote/teleradiology interpretation as applicableCall ResponsibilitiesParticipate in departmental call rotation as assigned.Provide after-hours consultation for urgent musculoskeletal imaging studies.Support trauma and emergency imaging coverage as required.Performance ExpectationsThe MSK Radiologist will:Meet departmental turnaround time standards.Maintain high report accuracy.Participate in quality and peer review initiatives.Demonstrate professionalism and teamwork.Support referring physician satisfaction.Contribute to departmental growth and service excellence.Physical RequirementsAbility to sit for prolonged periods while reviewing imaging studies.Visual acuity sufficient to interpret diagnostic imaging.Ability to perform image-guided procedures requiring fine motor skills.Ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, and staff.Core CompetenciesClinical ExcellenceDiagnostic AccuracyPatient-Centered CareCollaborationProfessionalismCommunicationQuality ImprovementInnovationEducationAccountabilityAre you ready to make a difference?
