Assists department leadership with staffing, interviewing, orientation, training, coaching, mentoring, and competency assessment. Coordinates and facilitates the clinical experience of students in affiliated education programs. Participates in various committees or teams and assists with special projects as assigned. Ensures department workspaces are maintained in a neat, organized, and properly supplied manner, and oversees post-analytical activities. Follows and enforces safety policies including the use of PPE, handwashing, and hazardous chemical handling, and completes required training for handling hazardous waste. May include transport of hazardous waste from the point of generation to a designated secure storage area; employee will be required to complete initial training (prior to handling hazardous waste) and refresher training to include proper handling and transport of hazardous waste, and proper selection, use and disposal of personal protective equipment. Leads and participates in laboratory performance improvement activities, promoting team building, employee engagement, patient satisfaction, and safety. Evaluates and monitors program needs, identifies unmet needs, and assesses program services and staff. Performs and oversees pre-analytical laboratory activities, including equipment maintenance, inventory control, specimen collection, processing, and cleaning. Provides technical and support information related to laboratory testing for all age groups. Supports staff through effective scheduling, workload assignments, troubleshooting, and motivation to achieve high performance. Other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to ensure departmental compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements. Exhibits technical skills and aptitudes related to specific laboratory specimen collections as performed in department or work area assigned. Displays the ability to comprehend, measure, reason, match, problem solve, and exercise judgment under minimal supervision. Exhibits ability to make appropriate decisions in stressful situations and handle multiple priorities and projects. Able to effectively communicate verbally and in written form in English with patients, staff, and customers of varied backgrounds in a respectful, effective, and professional manner. Exercises mature, independent judgment and the ability to handle confidential information within Hospital guidelines and applicable regulations. Builds and maintains effective, productive teams and appropriate peer relationships to facilitate organizational objectives. Ability to utilize standard computer-related applications, and ability to learn and apply new applications and programs. Must be able to read, write and speak conversational English. Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office. Ability to provide daily direction to phlebotomists and other support staff. Up-to-date phlebotomy practice knowledge in order to appropriately evaluate effectiveness and identify factors that may impact desired outcomes. Ability to maintain records and prepare reports/correspondence related to phlebotomy services. Ability to address phlebotomy complaints and escalated through established channels, as needed. Education Associate (Preferred) High School Graduate or Equivalent (Required) Work Experience
