To meet its trust responsibility to Indian Tribes, BIE works to strengthen education opportunities for American Indian students to be successful and competitive globally; to enhance student participation in their tribal communities; and support tribes in nation-building, in development of the next generation of tribal leaders.Responsibilities:This School Cook prepares and over sees the preparation of a variety of food items found in breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals or any combination thereof, and a variety of snack, party, and other special food items. Routine work is performed independently, but the more complex assignments pertaining to food preparation will receive technical review and assistance dependent on the level of assignment. The School Cook provides leadership in the school kitchen department with all functions and works in a professional manner with students, co-workers, managers, parents and general public, and promote school mission; prepares appropriate meals according to nutritional guidelines of the USDA's New Meal Pattern; maintains sanitation and safety requirements throughout the food service unit and including outside kitchen areas; appropriately sorts and stores food deliveries; maintains and appropriately uses cooking appliances in accordance with operator and safety requirements.**INDIAN PREFERENCE POLICY:**Preference in filling vacancies is given to qualified Indian candidatesin accordance with the Indian Preference Act of 1934 (Title 25, USC, Section 472). Successful completion of a one-year (two semesters) or longer full time training program in food service management may be substituted for the years’ experience. School cooks must possess and maintain a valid food handler’s certificate. All applicants must demonstrate the ability to follow written and oral instructions. **CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:** A valid State Driver’s license is a prerequisite, if the position requires operation of a motor vehicle in performance of work. A valid State Driver’s license must be maintained as a condition of employment; failure to do so may result in removal from the position.An annual physical examination is required. Incumbent may be required to wear personal protective equipment as necessary. **PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:**School Cooks must be able to lift over 50 pounds and be in excellent physical condition. Good distant vision in one eye and ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters are required, glasses permitted. Ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, is required except that some positions may be suitable for persons who are blind or deaf. In most instances, an amputation of arm, hand, leg or foot will not disqualify an applicant for appointment, although it may be necessary that this condition be compensated by use of satisfactory prosthesis.
