The Gardener performs landscaping and grounds maintenance services for the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Training Center (TRACEN) Birmingham Southern campus located at 900 Arkadelphia Road, Birmingham, AL 35254 .

• Plan and execute small-scale landscaping and grounds maintenance operations.
• Prepare and grade terrain for landscaping projects.
• Apply fertilizers, seed lawns, lay sod, and maintain healthy turf areas.
• Transplant, cultivate, and maintain shrubs, trees, flowers, and other plants.
• Plant new lawns and repair established lawns using appropriate seed mixtures and fertilizers based on soil conditions and site requirements.
• Install and maintain landscape features to achieve desired aesthetic and functional outcomes.
• Mow, edge, and trim lawns using hand-operated and power equipment.
• Trim shrubs, cultivate garden beds, and remove weeds as needed.
• Spray trees and shrubs and apply supplemental liquid and dry nutrients to maintain plant health.
• Clean and maintain grounds using rakes, brooms, hoses, and other landscaping tools.
• Dig trenches and install drainage systems, including drain tile where required.
• Perform minor repairs to concrete and asphalt walkways and driveways.
• Safely operate and maintain gardening implements, hand tools, and power-operated landscaping equipment.
• Report equipment malfunctions, safety concerns, and maintenance issues to the appropriate supervisor.
• Adhere to all safety procedures and environmental regulations while performing duties.

• Minimum 1-2 years of landscaping, grounds maintenance, or gardening experience in commercial, municipal, military, or federal environments.
• Knowledge of lawn care, plant cultivation, fertilization practices, and landscape maintenance techniques.
• Experience operating landscaping equipment, including mowers, trimmers, blowers, and other power-operated tools.
• Ability to perform physically demanding work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Ability to pass a comprehensive background check, drug screening, and comply with site security requirements.
• Valid driver's license preferred.
• Have or obtain any required site-specific certifications, training, or immunizations.
